I believe that moderators eventually DID tell posters to stop doing the random recipe posting. If I recall correctly.
That would be @Miller , not “moderators”. And that’s not my understanding. But maybe Miller can clarify.
I dont see a pit thread about me ![]()
So I guess I should start a recipe thread in Cafe.![]()
![]()
Ah, okay - “moderator” then. I tried to look for something, but it’s a difficult search as a regular poster, so I stopped (there were too many interesting rabbit holes to go down anyway).
Every category has a sticky at the top called “About the _____ Category” that lists the moderators for that category in it. This is the one for the BBQ Pit:
But there is one for every category. If you ever want to find out who is the mod for a particular area, just look for that sticky.
I think it’s just pinned. If you’ve unpinned it at any time it will have disappeared
by now.
In Discourse that’s what a “sticky” is. There isn’t any other kind of sticky thread. You can make your own and unmake one that’s there by default.
But you are right that if a person unpins it, it might be missing, so it was good of you to point that out. It’s certainly possible that a person might not see it if they unpinned it for whatever reason.
imho, a sticky would not be allowed to be unstuck by a user, whereas a pinned
post can.
Wait, people actually read the pinned posts? I figured that pin symbol was an indication to “skip this to get to the real posts” until you get tired enough of seeing them to unpin them.
Doing some checking, all “pinned” topics are removable. So, it’s just a matter of semantics whether you consider a “pinned” topic to be a sticky or not. I consider the default pinned topics to be stickies, since they serve the same role in Discourse that a sticky thread would.
I do all the time. I refer to them frequently when I want to remind myself who is a mod for a category or if there are special rules for the category. But I might be weird. (Well, I know I am weird, but I guess I’m not sure this is an example of that.)
I’m going to post this here for visibility, but any discussion of it should go in an ATMB thread.
A lot of people have been reporting Beck’s posts in this thread for hijacking, being off topic, or even trolling. I’ve rejected all of those flags. None of Beck’s posts in this thread have violated any rules.
Hijacking isn’t really a rule violation in the Pit. As the more rules-light forum, we tolerate more topic drift here than in the more formal forums. But, beyond that, deliberately derailing a thread is a traditional way of showing disagreement with an OP: whether its the classic reverse pitting, where the OP of a pit thread ends up the roastee, or its the other posters turning a Pit thread against a poster into a love-in, or posting something completely off-topic, such as sharing recipes. Beck’s strategy here isn’t even off-topic. The thread’s about her, after all, and she’s posting about herself.
A few people have accused her of trolling, and this one bothers me a bit. Yeah, she’s posting to piss you off - in the thread that was created specifically for people to insult her. Of course she’s trying to disrupt the thread. You would, too, if it were about you. She’s not trolling, she’s winning the thread.
As the Pit mod, one thing I strive to avoid is telling people how they’re allowed to respond to being attacked. The Pit only functions so long as it’s viewed as a neutral space for Dopers to sort out their differences. Once I start telling people how they’re allowed to engage in those fights, I’m putting my finger on the scale, and that neutrality is gone.
Also:
No, the recipe thing is still allowed.
D’oh !
In order to verify to myself that an unpinned post would disappeared, I unpinned
it and it disappeared.
. What a dingbat. And now I can’t find it.
Searching for “About” finds nothing.
Could some kind soul please post a link to it so I can repin it !
Thanks.
I’d be glad to help, which one? I posted the link to “About the The BBQ Pit Category” thread earlier, but I can repost that or any other one.
I can see how that would really suck if you couldn’t find it again!
Note you can search for pinned threads with the advanced search. This one finds all pinned threads (there are only 45), or you can add other filters like only search in The BBQ Pit.

That’s freaking cool.
Oh yes ! Cheers.
On searching, it appears that I am alone in thinking there is or should be a
difference between pinned and sticky posts. Discourse can’t do it at
individual post level.
I get what you mean though about a “sticky” being something that a regular user can’t avoid having pinned, as that’s how it normally works other places. And I don’t think Discourse even uses the “sticky” term, so I probably shouldn’t use it here either. (I’m just used to it from other forums.)
I have recovered it… I didn’t realise there was so little in it ! (ie just what was in
the preview where you posted the link !)
Irony alert: I just a moment ago realized that I’d somehow unpinned the “About” thread for The Game Room. I used @TroutMan’s link to find it. It wasn’t showing up in searches.
I have it pinned again.
