Milk and Cake When I've Got the Flu?

It’s not a stomach flu, and I’m pretty sure my stomach can handle anything. Is it a bad idea to have milk and carrot cake when I’ve just got a regular flu? Are there any foods I should really stay away from because they will make my symptoms worse or keep me from getting better?

I’ve been taking vitamins and drinking lots of water and eating bread and peanut butter and soup. But I’ve also got a carrot cake in the fridge, and somehow I don’t remember being allowed to eat any sweets when I was sick as a kid, and I remember not being able to have any milk. Is there a reason?

Influenza (flu) is a respiratory viral infection. Is this what you are referring to?

There is an old wives’ tale about not drinking milk when you’ve got a fever. Supposedly the added heat will curdle the milk rendering it indigestible. This is wrong on serveral levels.

If you feel up to having cake and milk, I don’t see any reason not to (in moderation, naturally).

I’ve always been a big believer that when you’re sick, all rules are suspended as regards what it is or isn’t appropriate to eat. I think if you feel crappy and all you want is some carrot cake, go for it. ‘Comfort food’ has always had great curative value for me.

Which may explain why I am overweight…
