Milk substitutes

I’m a semi-vegan (i.e. Vegan when I can be bothered), and have recently been trying various milk substitutes:
[ul]
[li]Soya Milk: I found this to be unbelievably nasty. It tasted like particularily bland milk mixed with flour.[/li][li]Hazelnut Milk: Equally awful. It tasted like mouldy hazelnuts.[/li][li]Almond Milk: I really like this. It was a bit sweet, but otherwise very nice.[/li][li]‘Rice Dream’: I don’t know yet. I have a carton of it sitting there, waiting for me to dare to try it.[/li][/ul]

Anyone tried anything similar to these? What are your thoughts on them? Anything you’d reccomend?

I don’t really need milk substitutes - I’ve never been a big milk drinker, and I take a vitamin/mineral supplement so calcium isn’t a problem, I’m simply curious.

We don’t drink milk in my house. I recommend the kinds of soy or rice milk that are kept cold in the refrigerator section over the others. Sun Soy is not too bad and neither is Silk. We only drink vanilla or chocolate though. I’ve had the refrigerated Rice Dream and it did have less of an aftertaste than the regular kind. But since we’ve been dairy-free for 3 years now we are used to the soy more than the rice.

When we first started drinking rice or soy milk, we got used to the flavor by drinking smoothies instead of just straight. The recipe used to be on every box of Rice Dream, I don’t know if it still is. After several weeks of no milk and drinking those smoothies, it tasted normal to drink rice milk.

I drink Pacific Foods Lowfat Original Oat “Milk.” I like it the best of soy, rice, almond, and oat. It works in recipes, too. I buy the ones off the shelf; never tried the kind from the refrigerated section, and I imagine my local supermarkets don’t carry them.

Some soy milk brands taste as you describe, but others taste wonderful, so try whatever is in your area.
