The “handful of posters” I referred to was talking about the posters who opt to go into the box and interact with whoever’s locked in there. Most posters don’t bother. I mean, yes GB is smaller than here, but we’ve certainly got more than a handful of posters. I don’t see why the concept couldn’t work here, but I know it’ll probably never happen.

Pretty much this. If this place wants my money, it can do more than hand wring and wail “but decisions are hard” when it comes to moderating the genuine despicables.
It’s funny - the women I knew that went through things like this in the 60s have often said to me “I am so proud of you for standing up and having a voice against this - we never had a voice. We never had the support.”
This has been a really hard week, for me and others I know. So many of us trying to work the system, and fix what is broken. Threads like this one may have caused some of us even more pause before coming forward.
I don’t know how to fix the Dope. I know I have been a member here forever, or so it seems. I know I love a lot of the posters here, and I hope we can make it work. But I am tired, as I am sure a lot of women (and some men) are.
It may be as difficult to root out the misogyny here as it is out in fleshworld, but maybe it’s worth it in both cases.

I haven’t read the entire thread, but I am tired of the attitude towards women here.
My daughter is just turning 10, and I look at the posts thinking of how I would have to explain them to her.
I hope that the administration and moderators can find a better way forward.
Ok, O agree, but I hope we can draw a line between stuff like victim blaming & rape apology and fun but maybe too “boys club” like “Who is hotter Betty or Wilma?”. We need to moderate and get rid of the first, but only tone down the second, imho.
Us guys are a little clueless at times, but as long as we keep the nasty mean spirited crap out, we can work slowly on the joking around.

Notwithstanding the constant, repeated accusations and abuse that fly out of the mouth of a certain poster, I am not happy with an echo chamber and I’m not going to chuck a huge wobbly every time some clueless bloke makes an inappropriate/sexist remark. However there’s a time and a place. A serious discussion about a topical issue is not the place to pipe up about some actress you fancy. A thread about movie stars is/might be. etc. It’s not that hard for those who aren’t completely clueless. And if someone (of any gender) makes a particularly clueless remark and is pulled up on it by others, don’t start abusing and attacking left, right and centre. Stick to the point of the discussion. Either disagree and move on, or rethink. Attributing motives and imaginary scenarios to “explain” why somebody is pulling you up and then spewing abuse based on your own delusions is unhelpful (and infuriating).

I think murdering babies is even worse than rape and pedophilia, and, by pro-life definitions, most of the people here defend murdering babies. Even so, if I were a pro-lifer, I wouldn’t put you (us) in the same category as someone who beat a toddler to death, because you thoughtfully and honestly don’t regard abortion as murder.
Back in the '60s, returning Vietnam vets were reviled as murderers. Now we’re all “support our troops.” Should we ban posters who’ve been in the military, or thank them for their service?
I don’t know what I think of StarvingArtist’s defense of pedophilia, because I never saw it, but I have followed the rape threads. I don’t think he regards what Kavenaugh allegedly did as real attempted rape, or attempted “rape” rape, or something. He’s been a hell of a lot politer than the virtuous liberals who’ve called him names, and I think we need to recognize that people can have different opinions on moral issues without being monsters. If you refuse to talk to anyone with a different moral opinion, you’ll have to lock yourself alone in your room, hating yourself for your past evil thoughts.

I don’t recall that happening. And that’s a good thing. That’s what makes Starving Artist so infuriating.
This place is a bit of an echo chamber. We keep the worst of the worst out. And y’know, just to take one prominent example, while we lost an example of what right-wing thought actually looks like with Clothahump’s untimely departure, I don’t think it was necessarily a bad tradeoff. And is it really our fault if the rules we set within our community makes it too hard for republicans to stick around, merely because we do things like forbid rape jokes? Well, shit, if that’s not a core tenet of republican thought, we’re not necessarily excluding republican views. And if it is… Well, in that case, maybe we shouldn’t have republicans around. We don’t have too many racists or facists either, last I checked - should they be included to expand our echo chamber?
