I like to refer to Greitens as Missouri’s “L’il Trump”. Those two are like peas in a pod. Not that Trump is a macho stud badass, but they are both politically inexperienced, lots of questionable campaign funding, putting their cronies in key government positions… the same kind of crap that Trump is doing in Washington, Greitens is doing in MO.
Maybe the Attorney General, a political novice whose only claim to fame is winning a Supreme Court case claiming religious institutions aren’t bound by the Americans with Disabilities Act, should be more careful while the court case against Greitens hasn’t even been tried yet.
On the other hand, maybe Greitens should quit now before the House committee finishes its investigation into whether he used his own charity for political purposes.
Here’s CNN’s coverage: https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/11/politics/eric-greitens-missouri-governor-report/index.html
Seriously, he came out of nowhere, bankrolled by a billionaire, and looked in over his head once elected.
Used to be, guys with more money than good sense bought sports teams.
Not enough of those around to buy any more. Maybe we should support expansion of the NFL/MLB/NBA? ![]()
Let’s leave the New Jersey Generals out of this.

He’s hated the NFL ever since “beating” them in the USFL anti-trust suit, and getting awarded damages of $1. Trebled to $3 since it was deliberate.
That’s more than he’s paid some contractors.
Trump tried to buy the Buffalo bills in 2014 so I guess he’s OK with the NFL now - or was a few years ago. Another bidder for the Bills that year was a group headed by Jon Bon Jovi.
The Missouri Senate Majority Leader (R) has called on Greitens to resign. A guy whose family gave Greitens more than $2 million during the 2016 campaign has called on Greitens to resign. Pretty much everyone at this point is telling him to give it up.
Spitzer quit after 2 days in his sex scandal in NY. This guy might be more stubborn and stick around slightly longer.
Actually, the scandal broke three months ago.
Prediction: Greitens won’t quit before his trial next month. And with his attorneys filing motions to dismiss just about every day, one of them might actually stick and the entire case gets thrown out.
Until a judge gets pissed at the frivolous motions and threatens them with contempt.
IANAL, but please tell me that could happen.
I dunno. In today’s events the judge seemed pretty unhappy that the prosecutors suddenly turned over a taped deposition that before yesterday they said didn’t exist.
Wow, I read about this today also. Just what in the fuck is this guy’s deal? Trying to be as objective as possible: is there any chance that the charges against him are false?
I don’t think he will quit. I think he is not going to go anywhere until or unless he is formally convicted of a crime. The fact that he made it through one of the most arduous and attrition-based military training on this planet suggests to me that he probably possesses the capacity to become extremely detached from the proceedings at the present time, which is the only way to go if you’re trying to ride out something like this.
BUD/S is no shit, and the guys who pass not only it, but the advanced training that follows it and is even more demanding, possess a level of will that is unfathomable to the average person. It doesn’t confer heroic status or mean that they’re necessarily great people, although some of them definitely are both. It does mean that their capability for being detached and taking a really hard kick in the nuts is exceptionally high.
Maybe I’ll be proven wrong though, and he’ll resign tomorrow. Who the fuck knows.
Missouri Republicans have particularly interesting timing when it comes to looking like a bunch of misogynistic neanderthals – they’re at their absolute knuckle-dragging worst when Claire McCaskill is in the middle of a campaign for Senate.
This morning the Mo. Attorney General (who happens also to be running for Clare McCaskill’s Senate seat) announced there’s evidence Greitens may have used the donor list from Greitens own charity to solicit contributions for his election campaign – which is a felony.
Now here’s the twist. The Attorney General, a Republican, says he turned over the evidence to the Circuit Attorney who’s already prosecuting Greitens on the salacious but less serious previous charge.
Greitens has labeled the accusation “ridiculous” and also taken the opportunity to remind everyone that the Circuit Attorney is a LIBERAL DEMOCRAT FUNDED BY GEORGE SOROS.
Meanwhile, the judge has promised to rule on all the various motions to dismiss the first case on Thursday.
I’m really following this case quite intently, because it’s an interesting counterexample to the cascade of people who have resigned or were forced out of so many other political positions, who have been in the news during the chaotic past year. Greitens is holding out so steadfastly, I have to imagine that (regardless of the truth of the accusations), his goal is to deliberately NOT do what all the others have done, and hang on as long and as tightly as he can, to the bitter end. Whether it will work, who knows.
It’s probably something like “SEALs don’t quit when the going gets rough”
I don’t see Trump quitting either , he will think he can survive impeachment if it comes to that. And he may just beat it .
