How strong would Mitt Romney be if he ran as a Democrat?
He’d be torn to shreds in the primaries. All his opponents would need to do is pull out the 2012 commercials against him.
I was thinkin’ about Mitt yesterday. It’s too bad he’s too sane to be President.
More importantly, against who would he be running. I mean any True Q Republican (joke intended) would define him as a traitorous former RINO and his chances of getting crossover votes would be slim.
Sure there are a number of conservative democrats (read pre-trump Republicans) who might be interested in him, but as @Kent_Clark pointed out, he’d be shredded with the majority of the party.
I think a better question would be how strong he would be running for president as a Republican IF (unlikely in the extreme IMHO) the crazies were kicked out of control. Under those circumstances, yeah, it might be an interesting question.
He’d be weak as fuck. He “believes” things based upon his religion that are really not gonna fly with Democratic voters .
It’s not even close to a thing.
Why would Mitt Romney want to run as a Democrat? He’s not an “own the libs” type and apparently has cordial relationships across the aisle, but he’s not a centrist. He holds conservative (sometimes very conservative) views on almost every issue. He reliably voted for Trump’s policies and nominees. What conceivable benefit could there be to him in trying to run as a Democrat?
Romney is right in that no-man’s land where nobody would vote for him. Republicans won’t vote for him because he’s too liberal and Democrats won’t because he’s too conservative.
Agree Romney’s got no chance to be President in the current world. Neither would GWB, GHWB, nor Saint Ronnie the Befuddled if they were each teleported into today at the age they were when they contemplated their first run at the WH.
A different and entertaining question is that if by magic in two parallel Bizarro universes Romney was selected as either the R or the D candidate, in which world would he get more votes in the election?
Mitt “I like firing people” Romney?
Mitt “47%” Romney?
Mitt “binders full of women” Romney?
Mitt “Please proceed, governor” Romney?
THAT Mitt Romney?
Hell no.
I think Romney is a better choice than many Republicans, with at least some ethics and backbone. Romney would not want to run as a Democrat and his views and history would not likely be well-received by Democrats who oppose abortion, espouse identity politics or have other views they deem progressive. So the question seems kind of extraneous.
(I am assuming some stuff about Romney’s views which might be currently untrue, although I doubt it. In any case, I also doubt he would win a Republican nomination in the foreseeable future.)
This is a nonsense post. There have been strong Dems in office, said Dems who are also LDS.
Being anti-Trump doesn’t make Romney more liberal anymore than it makes Liz Cheney more liberal. It just makes them less cowed than the rest of the GOP.
He’s taken a few more centrist (if not liberal) stances over the course of his political career, including creating Romneycare while governor of Massachusetts, and joining in a Black Lives Matter march in 2020. But, generally, his political stances are mainstream GOP views, and, as noted earlier, he has plenty of baggage, like the 47% speech, that could be brought back up.
He has the “advantage” that he’s not a Trump fan, not a QAnon supporter, and apparently not crazy. Most of his political stances are still not anything that most Democrats would support.
I thought he cuddled up to Trump for a government job, but that was Rick Perry.
There was a time Romney could have gone higher, but the current MAGA cult and his own failures have killed any chance of it.
He has been to the left of the Republican party on many issues but no where near representing the Democratic party. He could have switched parties years back and made a credible run for president as a Democrat after spending some time establishing his bona fides. Since he didn’t do that it ain’t gonna happen.
No, that was Romney, too. Post-2016 election but pre-inauguration, he had dinner with Trump and lobbied to be appointed SoS. (Secretary of State, but he ended up being appointed Shit on a Shingle.)
Thank you. I guess the human remoras just kind of blended together in my head.
Romney is a jerk. I can’t find video of his bossing the wait staff around at a benefit dinner, but this link has other jerk stuff. SECRET VIDEO: Romney Tells Millionaire Donors What He REALLY Thinks of Obama Voters – Mother Jones
If Mitt Romney ran for President as a Democrat, he’d have trouble defeating the two flakes who’ve already announced their candidacies (Marianne Williamson and RFK Jr.).
At this point it’s hard to know who despises him more, MAGA Republicans or progressive Democrats.
