I’m wondering what gesture he’s talking about. When I use my iPad I’m not making any particular kind of gesture.

Miyazaki is a very talented art director and he has a great imagination. But he has produced far too much really awful animation to earn that title.
I’m sure that there are 100x worse things happening on Japanese trains. He sounds like a Luddite, but he’s not old as you’d expect for that.
Just curious, gaffa, which were “awful”? I’ve seen a few, and they’re all fine, if a bit derivative of each other, and yeah, an anti-technology slant in some.
There are bits in his films which are brilliant, but there are other bits that are just plain bad animation. His human characters walk in a stiff-legged manner and there are any number of scenes with a very limited frame rate, with 6 or even 3 frames per second. And, most unforgivably, he (like virtually all anime directors) does not animate to a sountrack.
