Love the hockey crowd at PNC, such a beautiful place for the postseason. Also utterly confused by Dusty wasting two quality relievers – his best pinch hitter, no less – only halfway through the game, but whatever helps the Bucs!
“McCutchen is the real deal and no mistake.”
- Me, in 2009, 20 games into Andrew McCutchen’s career.
You’d have to be blind to miss that at any point. Many Pgh fans followed his minor-league career. He has immense talent, and it brings me no end of joy to know he’s ours until 2018.
And Martin hits another home run.
Speaking of Martin, here’s something I am (embarassed to admit) I never really thought of before;
Why are there so many more good Canadian MLB players than there used to be?
When I was a kid there were few Canadian stars. Ferguson Jenkins was great but the only position player I really remember was Terry Puhl.
Now there’s Canadians aplenty. There’s two MVPs in this game, Morneau and Votto. Russell Martin is Canadian. There are a dozen or more around the majors. If you look at a list of honors won by Canadian players almost all of them have happened in the last twenty years. When I was a kid it was Terry Puhl and Jenkins and maybe one or two others. I wonder why that is?
I think that was a home run but Jesus Christ, MLB; if you’re going to use instant replay would it hurt to install a goddamn camera right at the goddamn level of the fence to make these goddamn calls?
I mean, holy shit. The NHL said “hey, if we’re gonna have instant replay on goals, maybe we should have some cameras aimed at the goal line. Maybe even have a camera in the net. You know, to give us a better chance to see the damn play.” How hard is this, really?
Two consecutive batters now the fans have made themselves a part of the play. If this is our Bartman/Meier moment I’m going to hang myself.
So…no Chapman tonight, huh?
Buccos!
And we have fireworks.
Congrats, Pirates!
And then there were 9.
Thank you Pirates!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I am so excited they won tonight, I think they can give St. Louis a run.
But the Pirates actually played well down the stretch, instead of folding, swept the Reds in the last series on the road, and came in tonight ready to play.
First time in 21 years I’m excited! 94 wins on the season! And now into the NLDS!
Woo hoo!
The wild card play in game is a beautiful game filled with drama, fan support and pageantry which is what baseball is all about.
Courtesy of ESPN:
“Starling Marte is the first Pittsburgh left fielder with a multihit game in the postseason since Barry Bonds in Game 6 of the 1992 NLCS.”
In other words, two games ago. I hate meaningless statistics.
What an embarassment. Fuck Dusty Baker, fire his ass, or, barring that, stab his eyes with his stupid toothpicks.
Sox are winning the whoooooooole fucking thiiiiiiiiing.
Sorry to disappoint any dodgers/bandwagon. Your wooden wheels will fall off second round. Only because the dipshit tribe will fail as well as they always fail.
Sox 4-0 against Cardy-cards.
Yeah, that had to be tough for you. Two weeks ago, you were so high on the Reds, and were hoping the Pirates would pitch Liriano. The problem was you thought Liriano would pitch in Cincinnati and not Pittsburgh. And you could have never expected Baker to start Cueto.
That was a surprise to me.
I agree with you about Baker. He has the ability to get you to the playoffs, but he’s not a great postseason manager. Not sure why that is. But it could very well be the toothpicks.
I have a feeling you are going to get your wish, and he will be fired. Don’t have any insight, just a hunch.
There’s so much excitement about the Pirates out there that I almost feel bad about rooting for the Cards.
And not a bad game last night either - on base his first four at-bats (two hits, two walks), scored a run, almost made a sensational catch in center field - all of which I enjoyed after hearing Sour Marty Brennaman sneering about how McCutchen hadn’t had an MVP-like end to his season (because he didn’t hit well during the final regular season series against the Reds).
Aficionados of Reds radio broadcasts will also have enjoyed Marty’s sidekick observing after the first inning how sharp Cueto supposedly looked (even though there already were signs of trouble in the hard-hit balls he gave up for outs).
Cue-to!
Trivia time.
Before yesterday who was the only player on a major league payroll to play a playoff game as a Pirate.
