MLB: 2022 Postseason

Yes, and now the #1 seed is the only one with an extra bye week, making that spot extremely coveted in each conference.

Yes, good point.

And, yes, I mistyped ‘has’ instead of ‘had’, regarding the NFL. Good catch.

The current MLB post-season is setup to reward winning a division over having a good record. If they reseed based on record after the first round, then that rewards record over winning a division. Reseeding would most likely affect seed 3, devaluing that division win. The 1 seed is already getting enough advantage. (Full disclosure: I’m a Dodgers fan.)

I’d rather see a system where teams get to choose their opponents, based on seed. So first round, the 3 seed chooses who among 4, 5, 6 who they want to play. Other two play each other, with home field going to the better seed. Second round, the 1 seed gets to pick among the three other teams, while the other two play.

Works out well for the division winners: the 1 seed gets a bye, homefield advantage and pick of their first opponent, then homefield advantage again. The 2 seed gets a bye, then homefield advantage. The 3 seed gets homefield and pick of their first opponent.

Oh, sure. Like there isn’t enough arm-chair managing and next-day recriminations in the MLB already! Letting teams choose their opponents is Madness.

You really don’t want to give your opponent any extra motivation like, “you chose us to be the easiest, we’ll show you that you should have picked someone else.”

But this year in the NL, both the 5 and 6 seeds won their wild-card rounds. So your Dodgers, with the best record in the world, are playing the Padres, who have a better record than the Phillies, who are playing the Braves. (Granted, it’s just a two-game difference.)

I’d rather that Mariners face the Astros now rather than the next round. M’s are hot and the Astros have been off for a few days so I think the Mariners can steal one or two of these that they maybe couldn’t in the ALCS.

To be pendantic, the game is at 6:37 (18:37) EST, but most of the country is actually on daylight savings time.

All MLB has to do is give seeds 1-3 to the division winners. They already do that (see: STL 93-69 is the #3 seed and NYM 100-61 is the #4 seed).

This was the setup:

#5 SDP @ #4 NYM; winner plays @ #1 LAD; SDP won 2-1
#6 PHI @ #3 STL; winner plays @ #2 ATL; PHI won 2-0

If NYM had won, this would’ve given a huge advantage to the Braves, and a big disadvantage to the Dodgers.

To be pedantic, there is no ‘n’ in pedantic and no ‘s’ at the end of ‘saving’. :stuck_out_tongue:
What’s everyone’s prediction for today? Mine is Mariners, Dodgers, Guardians and Braves

I’ll take the four home teams: Yankees, Braves, Astros, Dodgers.

And I’ll be fine if they all lose.

I don’t like reseeding between rounds. I’d like to see the full bracket at the start and know who to root for as my team’s potential next opponent. The NCAA doesn’t do it and neither should the pro sports.

So you don’t like the method by which the NFL determines the pairings after the wild-card round?

I’ve gotta say, I’m really loving YouTube TV. Yesterday I watched innings 14 and 15 of the Guardians’ walk-off win, and also the Mariners’ comeback from being down 8-1.

Kevin Gausman should’ve never been pulled. And hindsight is 20-20.

Today: okay Dusty Baker, let’s see what you got!

The NCAA also said that Miami and USC are in the midwest, so I wouldn’t exactly take their words as gospel.

The NCAA always matches, within each region, the lowest remaining seed against the highest. That’s the way it should be within each league, AL and NL.

The Dodgers dodged a bullet.

Did you mean “pedatic”?

Nope, I say once the brackets are made stick with it and if a team gets a break by having a big dog or two get upset before they have to play them, then so be it.

Yankees released their series roster. Unfortunately Hicks is still there. DJ is off because of his lingering injury issues. Carpenter is back on. Bad news came out. Scott Effross has been dropped from the roster and will need Tommy John surgery. They definitely didn’t need that news.

Damn, that is bad news.
