From the MLB rule book:
An INFIELD FLY is a fair fly ball (not including a line drive nor an
attempted bunt) which can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort,
when first and second, or first, second and third bases are occupied, before
two are out.
If you were watching the Brewers/Cubs game today, you saw something unusual in the top of the first. Brewers had runners on first and second with one out. William Contreras hit a sky-high popup on the infield, but nobody saw the ball in the sun. The ball dropped near first base, and the runners advanced to second and third, while the batter reached first. Since no fielder could catch the ball ‘with ordinary effort’, the popup was not ruled an infield fly, and the batter was not declared out.
Don’t remember ever seeing that before today.
Thank you for deleting it.

We’ve long had a rule against “Let me Google that for you”-type answers, as being overly antagonistic and condescending. I don’t know if that specific site is still around, but just a bare link to Google itself is even more antagonistic and condescending. You’ve been around long enough to know this, and so this is an official Warning.
Brewers lose to Cubs 4 to 3, extending the series. Cubs would have to win next two to advance.
Not knowing much I give the Brewers still more likely to advance.

I hope the Yankees can come back in the last few innings, but if they don’t I can take solace in not having to listen to John Smoltz any more,
Hey at least he isn’t Morgan.
And neither is he, thank Gawd, Tim McCarver.
Funny, I almost wrote that.
Congrats to the Bluejays, you had the better team, the better manager and played better.
The hopes of a Blue Jays vs. Mariners ALCS remains alive.
In the words of Ted Striker, what a pisser. Let’s make some changes for next year. By the way, did Smoltz ever mention that the Jays had a bullpen game today?
Rubber match for the Mariners on Friday. I plan on drinking in celebration or drinking in disappointment.
Since I’m a Blue Jays fan, you can bet that I’m drinking in celebration!
FMTT.
Man, when the Dodgers wheels come off, they come off HARD!
I’ve long said that whenever the Dodgers win, it is despite Dave Roberts, not because of him. He’s horrible when things aren’t going well.
Yes, that was 1992, not the ‘93 Series against Philadelphia. They invited the color guard to Toronto to carry it again.
So anyway… three series keep going. Big Game 5 showdown between Seattle and Detroit is set. Toronto gets to rest. They could use it in hopes of getting Bichette and Bassitt back.
Division Series don’t have official MVPs, but mine for ALDS-1 is Ernie Clement. Dominant though Vladdy was, Clement was key in every win, always in critical moments, and he is a wonderful defensive player.
I haven’t been following the Dodgers closely enough to understand their pitching situation, but leaving Kershaw out there just seemed bizarre. He gives up a hit and a walk in the 7th and then a homer and walk to begin the 8th. Shouldn’t it have ended there? Sasaki? Anyone?
And then Harper hits an absolute rocket that’s caught by the right fielder, then the Phillies make a baserunning mistake that costs them an out, then an intentional walk, followed by another rocket right at the right fielder. Coulda shoulda woulda been a big inning, but the Dodgers escape. I couldn’t believe Kershaw was back on the mound for the 8th, when it was still 3-1. Very poor managerial decision, IMO.
When Dave Roberts starts “thinking”, things usually go astray. He has no ability whatsoever to manage a bullpen. You also never see strategies like bunts and double steals from him, nor do you see any sort of passion. He just sits there, for the most part taking his orders from Andrew Friedman. A pitcher can literally be getting shelled and not only will he leave him in, despite having a rested bullpen, but he will put the same exact guy out there the next night in a tight situation against the same team. Then he will sit lifeless while the guy gets shelled again. It’s happened too many times to count.
Last night was typical Roberts.
