That was a once in all history chain of events. Bravo to the umpires for getting it right in real time. Especially the prompt call about the non-catch which ensured everyone on both teams paying attention had a correct understanding of the unfolding scenario.
OTOH, WTF was the batter-runner at first base thinking when he took off for second with the catcher already trotting towards 3rd with the ball?
For some reason the official MLB site only has a 9-second clip. But the MLB Official Reddit Account posted the whole thing here: Reddit - The heart of the internet
Yep, don’t believe I’ve ever seen that DP before. Terrible baserunning by the runner on third. He should be standing on the bag, and as soon as the ball hits the glove, he takes off for home and scores easily.
Was that the batter running from first to second at the end of the play? I got the impression that the baserunners on first and second thought the ball was caught and stayed where they were; and it wasn’t until the end when they realized the force was on and they had to try to advance. By then it was too late.
That is indeed what the rule states, but the reality is that unless the batter ‘leans into’ the pitch, if the pitched ball hits the batter, he gets first base.
This whole postseason is an elaborate prank ginned up by MLB and the gambling websites. Whoever gets in the way will inevitably be run over by the Dodgers and their Yamamotos, Snells, Glasnows and Ohtanis. Outhit by their Ohtanis, Freemans, Betts, and a supporting cast of absurdly clutch supporting players.
Dave Roberts is a rebel, a spanner in the works. He likes an old-school, old-fashioned frantic comeback in the late innings too. That’s why he brough in Treinen yet again. Just to give the appearance of fair play, god bless him. It was theatrical, anyway.
