Looks like 2 runs will be enough tonight.
Most pleasant part of the evening was NOT hearing Joe Buck do the intros on the PA. First time in ages that hasn’t happened.

That’s a tough strike zone. And not a very good one…
I’m watching it delayed…
That is amazing.
The Cubs are the superior team, but in the 2014 postseason, both the SF Giants and the KC Royals were the worst teams in the postseason. They beat superior teams on their way to the World Series. In Super Bowl III the Baltimore Colts were heavily favored over the NY Jets. Last year the Golden State Warriors were unbeatable.
That’s why they play the game.
Woohoo - Game One shutout! Go Cleveland!!!
Back to back postseason shutouts by the Indians. An impressive win tonight.
Fuckin’ a what a game.
They are doomed, DOOMED I say!
Cecil is not amused.
Anyway, as others have mentioned, this might be the year of Cleveland-killing-off-regular-season-dominators.
IF the Cubs lose this series, what’s their medium-term prognosis? Pretty likely they’ll be just as good (or even a bit better) next year? Or is this their only chance this millennium to win it all?
The Cubs are built to win today, and for the next 5 years. They have a good, young team.
But it’s only 1 game. Relax, don’t get your tighty whities all knotted up.
Thanks.
The headline story on espn.wazoo used the word “doom”. And on sportsillustrated.dingbat it was “Corey Kluber’s dominant performance in the World Series opener exposed a weakness in the Cubs’ offense that the Indians’ staff can exploit”.
Yes, just like when the Dodgers shut out the Cubs twice in a row. Doom, doom I tell you!
Sportswriters are morons.
I wouldn’t put a lot of stock into what sportswriters say. Jayson Stark, the ESPN nimrod who once voted Shannon Stewart for MVP for having a good two weeks in August, babbles quite a bit about Cubs history in losing Game 1s, ignoring that most of those games were played by entirely different people who are no longer Cubs and are, in many cases, dead.
What Corey Kluber shutting Chicago out proves is that Corey Kluber is really awesome pitcher.
If Cleveland has several more Corey Klubers, I agree the Cubs are in serious trouble. However, having checked, it seems they forgot to add the Kluber clones to the 25-man World Series roster, so I’d argue they are only in a small amount of trouble. Always better to win Game 1, but we know little until Game 3.
Holy shit! I’m psychic!!!
Okay, so it wasn’t the seventh game, and it wasn’t the winning run. But the Cubs did walk in a run during the World Series.
Where’s my million dollars, Mr Randi?
You should already know where it is.
And if Trevor Bauer rediscovers his gopher ball tonight, it’ll be “Momentum shifts to the Cubs! Indians on the brink?”
The Cubs are feast or famine when it comes to scoring.
Got shut out by LAD.
Got shut out by LAD.
Scored 10 runs!
Scored 8 runs!
Scored 5 runs!
Got shut out by CLE.
If I’m the Cubs I’m not the least bit worried bout losing on the road to Kluber. Even if they lose tonight, I’m not going to wet myself just yet. Let’s see the shape of things after game 3.
That’s my feeling, as a Cubs fan. Beautifully pitched game by Kluber, a classic with a couple of fuck ups here and there, but no two in a row to hurt him. Great game. While I am rooting for the Cubs, I do have a soft spot for the Indians. Any other series and I’d be rooting for them. I still think the Cubs will pull it off, but I won’t be devastated if they don’t. I never even thought I’d see them make it to the World Series in my lifetime.
There have been 4 or 5 times in this post-season that this old long time Cubs fan has thought “Uh-Oh, I’ve seen this before, this is where the wheels fall off” and every time so far they’ve bounced back. These are not your father’s Chicago Cubs, these kids seem oblivious to that history and the angst that comes with a lifetime of following this team. Good on 'em.
They may very well lose this series. Hell, they could even get swept. But it’s way, way too early for anybody to start writing an obituary for this team.
Born and raised White Sox fan here in support of the Cubs. I liked that Cubs’ catcher’s play faceplanting into the fence to get them out of that inning. A real World Series play putting it all on the line. Bravo. But, um, whad’ya mean that pitcher doesn’t throw to first??
