MLB: April 2011

Fuck the Yankees.

Fuck them if you must, but the Os are 2-8 over their last 10 and it wasn’t all to the Yanks.

Actually, my sentiments have little to do with the Orioles’ fortunes. I’m well aware of Baltimore’s ability to lose to just about anyone. Baltimore could be 50-0, and i’d still be saying “Fuck the Yankees.”

Quoted for absolute truth.

Here’s some similar stats that sum up the Toronto Blue Jays. Jose Bautista is batting .371 (23 for 32) with 7 homers - and just 10 RBI. All of his RBI have come on his home runs; his other 13 hits, including 2 doubles and a triple, have driven in nobody.

Why is Jose having so much trouble drivin’ 'em in?

Other players listed as Toronto regulars include:

Juan Rivera, .128 with no extra base hits
Adam Lind, .244 with one homer. He’s the cleanup hitter.
Travis Snider, .159 with one homer
Aaron Hill, .242 with no homers and 3 walks in 16 games
Corey Patterson, .196

Granted, Jose has scored more runs than he has played games. Perhaps 2010 was not as much of a fluke as many believed… so far, he’s been BETTER this year, and he looks it.

Just got back from Busch.

Yadi had a response, eh?

Pirates can pay their bills. Also, they have been investing fairly substantially in scouting and development the last few years which really is what they should be doing. It will just take some time for results to show at the major league level.

MLB took over the expos as a blatent extortion attempt to get some city to fork over hundreds of millions of dollars. The Dodgers situation isn’t really the same, and I would imagine they will have little difficulty finding new willing buyers. Though it does provide a little more evidence on why players are justified in wanting the owners to open their books in any sport if their salaries are going to depend on revenue.

Oh where oh where has the Reds offense gone?

Not having Rolen makes a big difference in that lineup, in my opinion. The top is scary, and I’m pretty sure Bruce will get going again, but Gomes just doesn’t scare me at all right now (hence the two walks to Votto…). And the bottom half doesn’t have a lot of punch with Cairo, Janish, Hanigan, etc.

If only they didn’t have Ryan Franklin, the Cards could be looking at a decent division lead instead of half a game.

It was a lot of fun watching the flamethrowing young relievers last night - Sanchez, Chapman, Boggs. Lots of gas.

And the Cardinals now have the best run differential in baseball. Despite the 12-10 record.

Franklin converts 'em all, and they’re 16 and 6.

How do you spell relief? Apparently not with an initial F.

The Blue Jays run their way out of another inning with an idiotic double steal attempt.

And the announcers say nothing. No “You know, the running game cost the Jays a chance for a rally here.”

I bet within three innings they will again start blabbering how wonderful it is that the Jays are running the bases more aggressively.

Broxton, you suck!

Judging from the highlights (okay, lowlights for you), it looked more like defensive problems behind the pitcher than the pitcher himself. No?

Ian Kennedy pitched a helluva game for the D-Backs this evening.

I only watched that game because Kennedy is on my fantasy team, and he put together a complete game, 3-hit shutout against the Phillies.

That will do my fantasy team no harm at all, especially since my fantasy league uses the (stupid IMO) Complete Game stat as one of the pitcher stats.

Yeah, that blown save was Jamey Carroll’s fault not Broxton’s. He did what he was supposed to and induced the soft ground ball, Carroll just failed to pick it up. That said, Broxton is starting to lose his stuff. He used to consistently throw 95+, now he is sitting around 93. He usually starts the season with lower velo, but this is a big drop. He is starting to wear out.

Bullshit. A closer is supposed to close. 12 pitches max. If anybody gets wood on the ball it’s a fluke, not expected. Broxton needs to be traded to someplace like Seattle and we need to get an arm in that position.

Carroll needs to be flogged as well, but Broxton will cause us nothing but heartache all season, mark my words.

I don’t disagree that Broxton isn’t very good anymore. He shouldn’t have walked Bonafacio and he doesn’t have strikout stuff anymore. Padilla also shouldn’t have allowed a run in the 8th. Who do we replace Broxton with though? Kuo is hurt and too fragile for the job, Jansen isn’t ready, MacDugal is worse than Broxton. Gurrier is about the same level as Broxton.

That said, he got weak contact and a routine grounder to short that should have been a force out at 2B.

Yes, it sucks that there isn’t a lights out guy anymore on the team, but the infield defense was inexcusable.

“If anybody gets wood on the ball it’s a fluke, not expected.”…

Sorry, I’m confused. Do you really think Broxton should be striking every single batter out?

What’s the record for most Ks per 9 innings–13? 14? Maybe 15? Even for a one-inning-max reliever, striking out all the batters you face seems a bit excessive as an expectation.

Mariano Rivera, probably the greatest closer of all time, averages less than 1 strikeout per inning over his career. That means that at least 2 out of every 3 hitters “gets wood on the ball.”
