MLB: April 2011

Thank you. That is clearly the more logical explanation.

Winning a game on a suicide squeeze…that’s some mighty fun baseball.

Is it wrong that even though I usually root against the Yankees, I’m kind of hoping they sweep the Red Sox this weekend? I mean, the sounds that would come out of Boston after an 0-9 start. Bill Simmons might just retire.

And so Burnett is now 2-0 and Rivera has 4 saves already as the Yanks win 4-3 over the Twins. Mo needed only 7 pitches and Soriano bounced back nicely from Monday’s drubbing.

Curse you, Sinking Fastros! Stealing the sweep like that…grrrr!

God, isn’t Opening Day great, folks? The smell of spring in the air, the sound of bat on ball. And it’s all the sweeter with an opening day win for your team…

what?

Oh well, ya can’t win 'em all.

Interesting email I just got from the Arizona Diamondbacks:

D-BACKS INSIDER TICKET SPECIAL

If you don’t have your Opening Day tickets yet, take advantage of our D-backs Insider discount! Click on the “T” link beside Opening Day and use promo code OPENER to get buy one get one free tickets. Limited quantities are still available, so don’t miss out!

Wow, they’re having problems selling out Opening Day?

That’s kind of unfortunate. Are expectations that low?

The Orioles get another win, and still lead the AL East at 5-1. I’m savoring it while it lasts!
By the way, i’m not sure if all you baseball fans are aware of this or not, but just about every issue of Baseball Digest since 1945 is available for reading on Google Books. It’s great stuff.

I saw a stat on ESPN this week, that if you count games just since Showalter took over, the Orioles would be leading the AL East.

And a triple play on Sunday!

So a few days ago, my manager asked if I wanted to take Friday afternoon off, join the party that’s going to Opening Day at AT&T Park, sit in the corporate box, watch them hoist the World Series Champs flag…

oh hell yes. :D:cool::eek::):smiley:

Quite possibly the slowest-to-develop triple play I’ve ever seen, but it all looks the same in the box score.

They are reporting on the Red Sox/Yankees broadcast that Manny Ramirez has abruptly retired after being caught by MLB for a new drug violation.

Fuckin’ a.

ETA: Here’s the first article I could find: Manny Ramirez retires after MLB notifies him of drug-policy 'issue'

He’d already taken a 50-game hit, so another violation would suspend him (without pay) until at least the end of July.

That official statement doesn’t actually say there was a positive test–I wonder if it was suggested to him that he retire right now and thereby keep the details out of the media. The league doesn’t want another high-profile steroid story, and while this is obviously news regardless of how it’s handled, at least this way it won’t be out there all season long.

The fact that he started the season as a 1-for-17 DH (.059) with no walks probably made it easier for everyone. :stuck_out_tongue:

They just said on the radio that the test was conducted during Spring Training and that he was notified about the issue a week ago.

I really wanted to settle in for a ball game tonight, but damn I can’t keep up with the west coast games. Reds v Dbacks doesn’t start until almost 10pm, and I can’t hang that long as I have to work tomorrow morning.

Off to the PS3 to simulate it on MLB The Show (which is the best baseball video game ever, hands down, bar none, by the way).

And the Yankees give the Red Sox their first win of the season… Something is wrong with Phil Hughes. Not sure if it’s an injury or what but his velocity has been down for a while now.

These close West Coast late games are murder.

The Jays looked doomed in this one because Peter Bourjos could apparently catch any baseball hit into the air within four miles of his location. I’ll ltell you, this guy can play some center field. The Angels have two multi-Gold-Glove center fielders and neither is good enough to play center field on a team with Peter Bourjos.

But anyway, somehow the Jays got a few past Bourjos and now they’re leading 3-2 but here comes Jon Rauch, Mr. Ugly Tattoos, who so far hasn’t looked good (in terms of his pitching, I mean, but he’s also ugly) in any appearance. Let’s see what happens, shall we?

Alberto Callaspo’s up. Rauch is struggling with his location.

Oh man, a sensational little play by Jayson Nix, who right now has the go ahead homer as well, one out.

Mark Trumbo. Fly ball center field, two out.

Hank Conger’s up. He’s hacking, and he flared a lucky single into center.

Peter Bourjos. Chris Pettit is running for Conger. Come on, Rauch, you ugly son of a bitch.

Ball one, high. Rauch is all over the place; a team with selective hitters would have gotten two guys on with walks by now. Strike one, a very favourable call. Strike two,m Bourjos chased a ball way outside. Strike three on an inside pitch.

Well, the Jays are 5-2, it’s not a lot of games but I like it so far.

Ridiculous home opener for the Giants today.

The Giants had a 97% win expectancy with the lead and 2 outs, nobody on in the top of the 9th. They proceed to blow the game via walk, misplayed grounder, grazed loose uniform hit batsman, and an incredible 12-pitch at-bat by Ryan Theriot ending in a 2-run single.

The Cardinals then had a 96% win expectancy with the lead and 2 outs, nobody on, in the bottom of the ninth. They proceed to blow the game via Rowand’s single, a wild pitch, and a Pablo Sandoval single. Tie game, dead even.

Cardinals get up to 70% again in the 11th, 2 on nobody out. Giants escape.

The Giants get to 93% win expectancy with Torres on third with no outs in the bottom of the 11th. Cardinals escape, and we’re back to dead even.

Finally, mercifully, the Giants win in the 12th thanks to an error by Pujols of all people. With 2 outs, Pujols drops the third out at first. The Cardinals (in a very questionable move) intentionally walk Sanchez to load the bases, despite having had an 0-1 count on him. Aaron Rowand comes through with the game winning hit.
