MLB: April

I heard it was Mark Prior with the surprise start. Dusty thinks his arm still has a little life in it.

Finally, it’s Opening Day! (yeah, I understand ESPN had some kind of event in Texas last night, but I’m not sure it really counts…)

About 3 1/2 hours until things kick off here on the left coast. silenus, thanks for the offer, but I think we’ll pass…we know there the Dodgers have been…

silenus-Nobody cares about a team that recently won back-to-back pennants? :dubious:

Only people in Texas…so, yeah, nobody.

Plankton - Here’s hoping it comes down to the wire and both our teams are in the playoffs.
Oh, and that yours loses, of course. :stuck_out_tongue:

Who cares? It’s Baseball Season at last!

I’m not sure, but it’s possible that this is the first time the Astros have ever had the best overall record in Major League Baseball (as opposed to tied for the best) at any point in the season. They’ve never finished with the best record.

Nah, on April 10, 2005 they were best in baseball at 4-1.

Thank God for Baseball Reference: 2005 MLB Scores, Standings, Box Scores for Sunday, April 10, 2005 | Baseball-Reference.com

No, they’re waiting to watch the team that’s won 2 of the last 3 World Series play the team with the biggest payroll in baseball history.

Shin-Soo Choo looks great in a Reds uniform! FINALLY the Reds have a legit leadoff guy!

I’m at work, so I’m ‘watching’ the Giants-Dodgers game on mlb.com gameCast, where they just gave us this bit of insight:

“Clayton Kershaw is trying to tie up Hunter Pence with fastballs inside; Pence is hitting .000 on pitches in that location compared to .000 overall.”

I feel so much more knowledgeable about the sport now…

I’m watching the same GameDay cast, except on the Dodgers site. Good thing my debate team has things to work on that don’t need my undivided attention on Opening Day.

Clown pitches, bro.

For frak’s sake, John Axford…you can’t even get past Opening Day without blowing a save.

As a fan of the Colorado Rockies, I don’t care for the L.A. Dodgers (or, more specifically, their business model). But I do think it’s cool that Magic Johnson was all set to throw today’s first pitch at Dodger Stadium before Donnie Baseball went to the 'pen to call in Sandy Koufax … the best part of all, I think, is that Vin Scully, who started his career with the Dodgers in 1950 (five years before Koufax threw a pitch for Brooklyn/L.A.), is still calling the game.

Oh, and (as kenobi 65 is aware) it’s extra innings at Miller Park. Go Rockies!

I hope all Dopers have an enjoyable baseball season.

The Yankees start off looking exactly as I envisioned them in the late off-season. A patchwork of mediocre young guys and some serious retreads. Ugh.

I’ve always liked Placido Polanco, both when he played for my team and when he didn’t. The guy seemed to hit a line drive every time I turned around, and he always hustled, and his defense was pretty decent–

BUT–

Batting fourth? FOURTH??? FOURTH???
Even for the Marlins, that’s way beyond pathetic.

Ha!

I’ve got the opening game for the 20th season of Coors field coming up on Friday and it should be a good time as always.

But I’m still a dodger fan and I get to see the Boys in Blue 9 times this year including the 2 fireworks games around the 4th. I’m hoping that all of that money we spent will be worth something. Unfortunately I can’t stream at work so I’m watching the ESPN gamecast.

I would like the season to end as of today.

Perfect opening-day results: Mets win, Red Sox win, Yankees lose.

It certainly can’t get any better.

[pedantry]Coors Field opened in slightly strike-shortened 1995 (with a walkoff HR by current Rockies hitting coach Dante Bichette) – the Rockies played their first two seasons at Mile High Stadium.[/pedantry]

Have a great time at the game.

I’m sure the Rockies will try to get some mileage out of the 20-year anniversary of Coors Field in 2015, however. Coors’ opening in 1995 makes it the third-oldest NL stadium, BTW.

A less then shocking bit of news from the Tiger’s game:

Verlander looks pretty good.

Currently the game is well within range for the implementation of chaos theory they call as a bullpen to horch it up though.
