MLB: August 2021

Angel Hernandez was the umpire, but he actually got the call right for a change.

Corbin Burnes tied a major-league record tonight with 10 straight strikeouts. He struck out the side in the second, third, and fourth innings, then got the first strikeout in the fifth. He finished with 15 strikeouts in 8 innings as the Brewers spanked the Cubs 10-0. Brewers scored 7 in the top of the first.

Burnes is the third pitcher to record 10 straight strikeouts. The other two are Tom Seaver and Aaron Nola. Seaver did it in 1970. Nola did it earlier this season.

Wow, I knew Seaver had the record but wasn’t even aware that Nola had tied it. Two takeaways here that will surprise absolutely nobody, (a) that strikeouts are really common these days; and (b) that the denuded Cubs are really bad.

wow 20-8 isnt that some kind of record …actually pitchers were lit up in general … maybe the no junk on the ball rule is working?

Not even close. The Rangers scored 30 runs in a game back in 2007. The Red Sox scored 17 runs in a single inning back in 1953. Go back before the modern era, and there are some doozies.

Jake Arrieta is done with the Cubs. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy

The highest scoring game in modern MLB history was 23-22. Of course the Cubs were the losers. Enjoy!

Chris Davis has retired.

“The Orioles support Chris Davis as he retires from baseball today,” the team said in a (massive under)statement.

Am I the only one who really doesn’t get the hype over the Field of Dreams game? Maybe it’s because I’m in Chicago but this is hyped more than the All Star Game was.

The movie was ok, but I haven’t watched it again in years and really haven’t wanted to.

I’m definitely going to watch it for the spectacle, but I’m annoyed that Fox is using Joe Buck, the world’s worst baseball announcer, for the game.

Or they no longer support him, depending how you look at it.

This is a huge relief to them.

They’ll be supporting him since he’s got a Bobby Bonilla contract.

I’m at least mildly curious, for the novelty of it, if nothing else (in the same way that the NHL’s outdoor games are interesting, especially if it snows during those games).

I know that the site has been a tourist attraction ever since the movie came out, and is apparently a pretty good draw for visitors.

Why the need for the video board at the Field of Dreams game?

Meh. There are dozens of baseball announcers that are 10x worse than Joe Buck.

I don’t either, but there a lot of people who do, and since I live in the region, close enough that TV stations have sent reporters to Dyersville, I’m going to respect that.

The camera man or booth director must be used to doing primarily NL games, because they kept skipping past the 9th hitter to go straight to the pitcher during the lineup announcement.

And that was the 2nd least-exciting flyover I’ve ever seen - they were WAY behind!

I know I’m a mean old bastard, but along with the video board, get rid of the in stadium music, the batter’s eye, and the bullpens. Also get rid of the modern cameras out in the open; conceal them somehow. And no DH or replay review for the game. No nets down the lines. Also get rid of the batting helmets. And get out of my corn!

And the fun continued today. A’s beat Cleveland 17-0, and Milwaukee beat the Cubs 17-4. The Reds could only muster 12 runs in beating Atlanta 12-3.

even though I know the law of averages will even things back up but can you foresee the articles in the sports rags in a week or so about bats on fire and maybe a little gunk on the ball is ok to slow em down ?
