MLB: August 2021

Chris Sale’s third immaculate inning.

I think the even odder oddity in a Royals game this week was on Wednesday. Salvador Perez was the DH for KC, but in the 10th inning, catcher Cam Gallagher was the man on 2nd, and is replaced by a pinch runner. Once the Royals take the field in the bottom of the inning, Salvy slots in as catcher, and the Royals sacrifice the DH for the rest of the game (which would last all of one out, as the Astros walk it off).

Other than Shohei Ohtani in a number of games, how often do AL games see a team surrender the DH?

I’ve definitely seen it, usually in oddball situations like this. Often it’s because of an injury or ejection.

It’s generally due to having one catcher catch and the other be DH. Then if the catcher gets injured or ejected, the DH moves to catcher and the DH is gone. I remember the Yankees doing that in the brawl game with the Tigers a couple years ago. Romine started and got in a fight with Cabrera and DH Sanchez had to catch.

The other times it happens are in blowouts where the losing team might bring in one of the players in the field to pitch for an inning.

yes they can. Lose to Nats 2-1, Braves beat Giants 6-4. It’s all over… I have watched some bad Mets teams before, but they were expected to be bad. Every single player on this team is hitting below career numbers. A bunch of bums! Can anybody on this team play this game?

Weird thing about the Mets is that they were holding their own with all those early season injuries.

Well, some of the pitchers sure can.

Salvador Perez of the Royals hit a grand slam last night for the second consecutive game. It was the third straight game that KC has hit a slam.

Perez is quietly having one of his best seasons as a hitter. He has played on all of the Royals’ game this year, although not all as a catcher. He’s batting .275 with 36 homers and 90 ribbies. And he’s still one of the game’s best defensive catchers. And if you’ve ever watched him, you know that he absolutely loves to play the game.

13 straight, but gaining little ground on Tampa who is also red hot.

A great streak, but hopefully Tampa helps the Yanks and loses a few.

All but one game, actually. And he’s surpassed his best season of hitting by far, and it’s still August. It’s so fun to watch him play and enjoy the game. He’s been my 78 year old mother’s favorite player for a decade.

The Royals will have some interesting decisions to make at catcher in the upcoming years, with MJ Melendez putting up big boy numbers in the minors. Salvy is going to get a lot more turns at DH, which is fine by me.

In today’s game against the Mariners, Perez came up to bat with the bases loaded in the third, with a chance to hit a grand slam in three consecutive games. However, he flew out to left. But in his next at-bat, he hit a 2-run dinger which was the margin of victory in the Royals’ 4-2 win.

And if you need proof that Salvy loves to play the game, check this out from last night’s game. Watch him right after he crosses first base.

Ha! I always enjoy watching the interactions between catchers and umpires. It really is the game within the game.

I know the schedule is screwy to start the year to give some wiggle room for opening day rainouts, but why would the Angels and Padres have an off day today, a Sunday in August?

In a first in the 60 year franchise history of the Angels, they are off on a Sunday. Golf will be played.

Ninjad I see.

I was looking to see if there was a concert scheduled at the stadium or some massive event , can’t find a thing. Maybe it is just a free day off since the Angels and Padres wouldn’t usually need to work around weather for their opening days

I wonder when the last time the Oakland A’s hosted Sunday Night baseball? I’ll definitely be rooting for them to take down the Yankees.

It happens because it’s an inter-league game. The Padres are only scheduled to play two games at Anaheim this year apparently the week-end fit better. Probably Sunday was scheduled off in case Friday or Saturday was rained out and a rescheduling was needed. (Yes I know it never rains in southern California according to song). Other teams have also had no games scheduled on a weekend day

Javy Baez and Fernando Lindor have decreed that if the fans are going to boo them, they’re going to boo the fans right back. I should have been a Brewers fan.
