MLB: August 2022

We seem to think more highly of Monty than Cashman does.

Has any other team ever gone from World Champions to empty cupboard total rebuild in so short a time? They definitely got screwed over by COVID, but even so, between the World Series and now they made a lot of other moves they didn’t necessarily have to make, including this one today. It could be argued the only reason this deal made any sense at all is because they already dealt away anything and everything else they had of value.

The Philadelphia Athletics did it a few times under Connie Mack.

And then the Oakland A’s did it in the 70s.

How about the Mets’ Ruf trade?

Marlins did it twice.

Yeah. We already traded Scherzer and Turner.

I was about to suggest them, though, IIRC, in both cases, it was a matter of signing or trading for players whom they knew they’d only have for that season, in hopes of making a World Series run, and fully intending to be not nearly as good the following year.

And gave all the money to Strasburg. Paid him like he was and was expected to be regularly available but he has never been nor will ever be that. :person_facepalming:

Vin Scully passes at 94.

Damn. One of the best that ever was.

I’m only a casual baseball fan and I know who Vin Scully was. RIP.

In the baseball broadcasts that are in my memories, it’s always Vin Scully’s voice, or Bob Uecker’s voice, that I hear in my head.

A bit surprised to see the Yankees let Montgomery go. I thought he was decent enough to be in the middle of the rotation. Great addition by subtraction in sending off Joey “K or HR” Gallo. The only better subtraction was giving up on Gary “Sieve” Sanchez.

I don’t get it, either. Since when do you just give away a solid starter like Montgomery? Bader is an excellent outfielder but meh at the plate. What gives? It’s hard to believe Gumby might be a ‘clubhouse cancer’ but maybe there is some other, non-baseball factor involved?

Are we talking about the same Joey Gallo? The lifetime .201 hitter?

Hey, with the decrease in batting averages in recent years, .200 is the new .225.

I disagree with the people who call him atrocious, but he’s never been an amazing hitter. I’m willing to look past a .253 avg when he puts up a .986 OPS like he did in 2019 (the year of the rabbit ball, when hitting was WAY up across the board). I can also put up with a .200 avg when the whole slash line looks like .200/.350/.450. But right now, he’s 25% worse than the average major leaguer.

But at least the Dodgers lineup won’t look much different when Bellinger needs a day off.

Oh doubters! I hereby predict that Gallo outperforms all expectations in LA and provides some clutch hits during the rest of the season and playoffs. Just you watch! 40 quatloos says the change in scenery pays off for everybody.

I’ll take that quatloo bet, but you have to say what those expectations are. I say he won’t put up an OPS+ over 90 with the Dodgers, and won’t hit more than 1 pinch hitting HR.

You’re on. We’ll use your metrics.

Risking the whole 40 quatloos is a chance I’m willing to take.

Since this is the first place I’ve been since I heard the news: RIP Vin Scully.

As part of the Soto trade, the Padres also get first baseman Josh Bell. I will freely admit that I know very little about him, but he’s hitting a career-best .301 right now, with a WAR of 3.6.

Which is why San Diego sent Eric Hosmer to the Red Sox and agreed to pay the bulk of his salary the 3+ years. Hosmer is batting .272 with a WAR of 1.3.

Hosmer is owed $39 million between 2023-2025.
