MLB Hot Stove

The odds of Palmiero being anything better than “profoundly embarrassing and cringe-worthy” are, at best, ten million to one.

If he in fact has “no doubt” he can do it, he is suffering from some sort of brain damage or mental illness.

Some spring training stunt perhaps? Or maybe he has a book coming out?

Or he’s run out of money, and this is the only thing he knows.

It’s been stated by some that this would “reset” his Hall of Fame eligibility. He’s fallen off the ballot, so the theory goes that if he plays in a game, even as a stunt, he’s back on the ballot five years later.

I’m not actually sure that’s how it works.

Dee Gordon to the Mariners according to MLBTR.

Right now the Yankees have a glut of outfielders. It was ridiculous that Clint Frazier sat the postseason out, they need to get this guy in the lineup. So of Ellsbury, Hicks, Gardner, Judge, Frazier, Austin, and Wade, who should get cut? I’m thinking Ellsbury. That still leaves five outfielders, perhaps one could DH.

Don’t know how Boone will do, he certainly seems to have a good background. I do hope that the Yankees put more position players and fewer pitchers on the 25 man roster. So many times in the postseason there were spots where a pinch hitter would be nice, but there were too few bats on the bench and too many unused arms in the bullpen.

They won’t cut Ellsbury, they’ll keep trying to trade him and then make him the 4th outfielder/DH. They won’t trade Clint or Judge of course. So if they can’t move Ellsbury, it will be either Hicks or Gardner that is moved. Austin & Wade are not worth mentioning. Neither can hit as well as the other 5 OFs. 1 of those 2 will make the team most likely as a bench player, but probably not both.

Frazier had done absolutely nothing to suggest he deserved to be on the postseason roster. He is a talented young ballplayer but you can’t win playoff games in 2017 with a guy’s potential to be good in 2020. He was the fifth best outfielder on the team.

Of course the Yankees are likely best off if Ellsbury is the odd man out, but he needs to be cut, because he’s not tradeable.

I am eternally befuddled by teams carrying 12, and sometimes even 13, pitchers in the regular season. There’s nothing good about it:

  1. It reduces the team’s flexibility in use of its position players, since the team is inevitably short of them

  2. The 12th pitcher in the bullpen simply siphons off innings from better pitchers

  3. It encourages over-use of the bullpen

The thing is, though, that it’s a vicious cycle; because teams are all carrying seven or eight relief pitchers, they will load up on one inning dudes and often lack skilled swingmen and long relievers. To make do with 11 pitchers you do need at least two or three guys who can come in and pitch three or four innings when the need arises.

In the playoffs, it’s even MORE silly. If you aren’t go to push your 10-11 best pitchers then, why the hell are you playing the games?

I think Ellsbury and around $31 million is tradeable. I think once he is down to $12m per year he becomes attractive to several teams and it is still worth it to the Yankees to clear the OF logjam and save $36 million doing it.

The Yanks were pleasantly surprised to go this far this season. They really weren’t on the same level as the Dodgers or Astros but they gained valuable postseason experience. I would have been happier if they gave Frazier some postseason playing time even if it meant losing the ALDS. Still, some of the young players are now postseason veterans- Bird, Judge, and Sanchez come to mind. The Yankees could go much farther next year.

I agree about the ridiculous number of pitchers that teams carry these days. So many times, the manager is in a position to want to pinch hit late in the game, looks at who’s left on the bench, and shakes his head in disgust.

Angels to sign Shohei. Thank you, God…and thank you Animal House thread.

Wow, I am very surprised. Just a month ago I would have put Angels somewhere around 8-10th in the likeliest places Ohtani was going to end up.
Also today, Brian Cashman’s deal as Yankees GM & VP is 5 years for $25m total.

Hey wait, they kicked John Coppollela out of baseball for life?

I think he favored the Angels because:

1)He gets to play with Mike Trout
2)He gets to play in a huge metropolitan area but without the negative press attention of other cities
3)There is a large Japanese presence in SoCal
4)The Angels pitching staff is mostly in his age group.

Now, what will Stanton decide?

Yep. And thank you Coppo for Maiten.

Correct:

MLB Network says Stanton has said he’d approve trades to the Yankees, Cubs, Dodgers, and Astros.

ETA: this was in response to madsircool.

Thank you. Once he decides the hot stove league can truly begin.

Reports are that Otani is signing with the Angels.
