MLB Hot Stove

That’s a hard no from one Cubs fan.

In terms of what they’d have to part with to get Stanton, this Cub fan agrees. Pretty sure that package of prospects would start with Ian Happ. And I’m just not ready to give him away for Giancarlo.

Although, Stanton does have the Marlins in a tight spot. They know he won’t approve a trade to most teams, so quite a bit of the team’s leverage is gone.

The Cardinals apparently had a deal in place with Miami, but Stanton flat refused to waive his no-trade clause. I guess he only wants the Dodgers…

Too bad because that was a very obvious upgrade for the Cardinals, and a good way to consolidate money and prospects into a proven talent. That said, it may turn out to be a bullet dodged.

Stanton and entourage spotted at Yankee Stadium

Ohtani will wear #17

I just don’t want any part of that salary after the Heyward trainwreck. Setting aside the prospects, the Cubs need pitching and they need to get their current young stars working counts again. Happ, Schwarber and 2-3 pitchers is way more valuable than another free swinging bomber. Plus, I’m always suspect of a Miami guy coming up to play cold weather baseball in Spring and Fall.

No worries. Stanton is going to the Yankees.

 This is a really risky contract to take on, they finally finished A-Rod’s. I hate the Opt-out existing, maybe that can be bought out somehow.

:smack: Going to be tricky to stay below the luxury tax threshold of $197m adding Stanton unless the really are taking Ellsbury back.

 Well if it happens, it ain’t my money at least and a lineup centered around Judge, Sanchez and Stanton is all kinds of awesome to think about.

Total Contracts with est. Arbitration costs for the Yanks is $151.2M. There is also an addition set of costs that affect total salary that I think can be around $13m, I believe, maybe someone else can clarify how this part works.

It appears there are 10 years and a $10m option left on Stanton’s contract for $295m. I think for the luxury tax that is a hit of either $28.5m or $26.8m. Leaving $4.3m or $6m to add a starting pitcher and whatever contract the Marlin’s take back.

Areas of where I’m not sure of my math, calculation the hit from Stanton’s contract. The $13m that is not tied directly to major league contracts and of course arbitration estimates can be wrong by several million.

This is nuts. I mean, yeah, Judge and Stanton. Wow. But as of now we have two right fielders plus Gardner, Ellsbury, Hicks and Clint Frazier. I’m sure Frazier could be the center of a package for a young starting pitcher, but that still leaves too many pieces.

I really thought this was a fantasy. The real needs are starting pitcher, third baseman, back-up catcher and back-up/dh for the fragile Bird.

  1. Either Gardner or Ellsbury will go in the trade for Stanton. Stanton will be LF most likely. We currently have 4 CF so no worries there. Maybe Castro also I am seeing.
  2. We need 1 starting pitcher and as long as we move Gardner or Ellsbury we have the money to bring CC back.
  3. We don’t need a 3B, 2 kids are pushing up for the spot and we still have Hedley in the meantime.
  4. We have enough players that can cover first if Bird goes down again, including Headley, we do not need a free agent 1b or 3b.

I don’t like this trade overall, I think it will not work out great in the long run, but it can be made to work with our needs for this year.

Rotoworld is reporting that the Marlins weren’t interested in Ellsbury. It looks like Castro is the biggest “name” - not counting prospects - and his trade will possibly open up room for Torres.

No word (again through Rotoworld) that Castro is the only major league player headed to Miami. The prospects aren’t identified as yet.

If it is only Castro and the Yanks are throwing in prospects, it would be a very dumb trade from the Yankee side. There would have to be some salary relief for the Yanks.

I’m not so sanguine about Headley. He’s a minus defender at third and among the most anemic offensively at first. Unless Andujar has improved dramatically defensively, then he is not a realistic option. Torres, I assume, is being pencilled in at second. I wonder if Judge or Stanton have any interest and/or the ability to play first. It would be sad to see Gardner go but I think the Yanks would rather hold on to Hicks and Ellsbury is unmovable.

If the deal goes through, I hope Stanton has three monster years and opts out. I doubt it though.

I am shocked by this but:

Well the $35m and Castro is enough for this to make some sense. Now the Yanks really need to move at least 1 outfielder and maybe 2. Castro has $23.72m remaining. So not as much relief as Ellsbury but only about $12m less at least. Next we need to see the prospects.

The prospects are 19 & 17 years old and below A ball thus far.

Holy shit, scary line up next year but man that is also a scary contract. We just got done with A-Rod’s disaster. Though Stanton gives no indication of being the headache A-Rod was.

So who needs a Center Fielder, the Yankee CF auction should be starting shortly.

The Giants. Whaddaya got?

  1. Ellsbury and a shitload of cash for a bag of balls
  2. Gardner for a prospect package
  3. Hicks for a bigger prospect package
  4. Clint Frazier for Madison Bumgarner

This trade should end any speculation about Harper or Machado becoming Yankees. If they are truly serious about getting under the luxury tax, I think this also means goodbye CC. Still, with the kickback, they’ll be paying Stanton an average of 26 million over ten years…not completely insane. I hope he ages well.

Once they move a CF, they’ll have the room to bring CC back. They’re very close currently depending on how the $30m from the Marlins work.

If the Stanton trade officially goes through, do the Red Sox do a knee jerk fractional signing of Martinez? His age, defense, demands and injury history would likely make this a bad contract?
