MLB: July 2021

Lots of people going on the IL today, conveniently before the All Star Break. I assume Kershaw is just for an extended rest period. Arrieta also to the IL, I assume because he sucks.

In WTF news tangentially related to baseball:

Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer beat up a woman, broke her jaw, choked her unconscious and then had anal sex with her. His defense, apparently, was that it was consensual at the hearing for a restraining order she got against him.

Yup yup, I know so many ladies I’ve been with have asked me to break their jaws. Sounds sooper legit!

Washington Nationals have managed to choke away an 8 run lead. Padres should have a position player pitching, but Scherzer imploded.

I watched that 7-run inning by the Padres. Max suddenly and inexplicably lost the ability to throw strikes. He hit two batters, and the Padres’ relief pitcher got a grand slam for his first career MLB hit. It was brutal. We ended up losing 9-8.

When was the last time a relief pitcher hit a grand slam?

Well, SI just told me: 1985.

Or use a formula involving the number of hits minus the number of errors. So let’s say the Marlins have 10 hits and two errors, they would have a value of 8. If the Braves had a value of 9 runs and no errors, they’d win. If the Braves had 9 hits and two errors, they’d lose. And so on. If they’re still tied, then yeah, maybe most base runners or fewest strikeouts.

Bauer strikes me as a head case even without this incident. There’s the infamous incident in which he chucked a ball into the outfield, prompting Terry Francona to say something to the effect of “What the fuck is wrong with you?!”

Bauer has always seemed that way, but there is rather a big gulf between being temperamental and outspoken (the latter of which I kinda like) and fucking BREAKING A WOMAN’S FACE AND THEN RAPING HER, which is into “sociopathic psycho.”

Right, like even if what he says is true do you want a guy on your team that like beating up women for fun. This was way past BDSM and into psychopath territory.

Zero disagreement on that point

The Indians’ haul from their salary dump of Bauer in the 2019 three-way trade with the Reds and Padres is looking better.

Franmil Reyes is having a solid season. Various other semi-warm bodies (re pitching), not so much.

*my image of Bauer during his time with Cleveland is of him dripping blood on the mound in the ALCS due to his drone injury.

This was way past BDSM and into psychopath territory.

Bauer has always been a weird dude, not someone I would have ever wanted on my team. I think he’s kind of obsessive, as witnessed in his crusade against foreign substances and then going ALL IN with the “if you can’t beat 'em, join 'em” attitude.

At least now the Dodgers are doing and saying the right things. They stopped selling Bauer merch and cancelled his bobblehead night.

I think the severity of this one has a lot of people freaked out. Video of Ray Rice knocking out his fiance was shocking but this is so far beyond that no one wants anything to do with it. Even if he is 100% being honest and he has it in writing that he could break her jaw, choke her out and fuck her in the ass I think he’s done playing baseball.

There are some things that should not be defensible by a claim of consent, and sex during unconsciousness is one of them. Furthermore, harming someone by choking them should be an absolute liability matter, too. Men have gotten acquitted from actually choking women to death by saying the woman consented to being choked; that should be absolute liability, at least manslaughter.

There would seem to be a solid argument that consenting to choking is not consenting to being killed so manslaughter would make sense since you “accidentally” went to far.

I’m not sure I agree with sex during unconsciousness though. I mean if the unconscious person wakes up and says there was no concent there is absolutely a problem but if they wake up and are OK with it I don’t see why that should be a problem.

We should probably move this out of the baseball thread though.

So Carlos Correa and Jose Altuve are choosing to skip out on the All Star game in Denver. Weird. Correa is choosing to stay home with his family and Altuve is nursing some kind of leg injury that has not caused him to miss any innings recently. I’m sure neither guy is ducking the Coors crowd reaction.

Those are some ugly white and orange uniforms the San Francisco Giants are wearing tonight.

Horrible idea. How about, you play regular baseball and if it goes 12 innings and it’s still a tie, then it’s just a tie and not made up. So what if someone wins the division by a half a game. I think Japan does it this way.

Just noticed the all star game is on ESPN? It’s the middle of July, I’m sure a network could broadcast it. Even the useless NHL all star game got broadcast time.
