It’s about time. Nothing against DJ, in his prime he was a hitting machine and could carry a team, but the time is past. Time to hang it up. Now Chisholm is a happier camper back at second and why not let Peraza have a good go at third?
I was thinking maybe Greinke won a Cy with a losing record, but he didn’t (and wasn’t particularly close to having a losing record in the year he won, or the years he was in the running). But checking his page it did make me a little sad for that weirdo that he retired 21 strikeouts short of 3000.
They had a shot at tying the franchise record of 11, which has happened five times, two of them just in 2015. That is an oddly low franchise record for a winning streak, actually, and this is a franchise that has had some pretty good teams. Most teams have done better than that at least once.
The only franchise that’s never had a double digit win streak are the Marlins, who’ve hit nine a few times.
Some eyebrows were raised when King Felix won the Cy Young in 2010 with a 13-12 record. He deserved the award and it helped undermine the obsession with 20 wins as a Cy Young metric and pitcher’s wins and losses in general.
Had Hernandez gone 12-13 in 2010, would he still have won it? I wonder. Sabathia was 21-7 that year and it wouldn’t have been a surprise if he won.
He’s double talking instead of saying DJ is done and a liability on the team. No need to help sink his chances of being picked up by another team.
It will be interesting to see if they will pick up anyone at the trade deadline. Everyone knows exactly what they need and will try to get a big price from them. Jones and Lombard. Jones is showing a lot right now. Lombard isn’t showing much at the moment. Might be time to unload him to get some value.
I think if we add some punctuation and a couple elided words to the Cashman quote it makes a lot more sense. This is my interpretation:
Or in translation: He’s seeking a full time starting position. If not here, elsewhere. With the fallback plan to be a platooner here or elsewhere. We wish him well, but we’re not keeping him full time; that’s for sure.
Bryan Woo no-hit the Yanks through 7 innings tonight. Mariners led 5-0 into the bottom of the 8th. Woo gave up 2 singles and a run, then was pulled. The reliever allowed a 2-run homer before getting out of the inning. Seattle’s closer came in to pitch the ninth…and blew the save. Now 5-5 going into extras.
Very interesting 10th. Peraza proves that the art of bunting is indeed dead. Bases loaded for Judge and he pops up to shallow right center. The throw beats Volpe to the plate but he makes a magic trick of a slide for the win.
Giancarlo Stanton hit the first pinch hit home run in his career. His stats as a pinch hitter are horrible.
One bit of controversy from last nights game. In the 9th apparently Yankee base runners at 2nd were signaling when Mariners closer Andres Munoz was throwing a slider. Not controversial to me. Pitchcom exists. No one is stealing signals. No one is using outside means to communicate illegally. If you are tipping your pitches that’s on you.
I was watching the post game live and saw what was in that clip. That’s Jack Curry who is a commentator but was never a player. His guess as to what the tip was is plausible but not definitive.
The other question is, why weren’t the Yankees more subtle about this? They play the Mariners again in a couple of weeks. I’m sure Munoz is working on it as we speak. Maybe they figure the chance of going against him with a runner on second are slim enough that they might as well show their hand now.
