Yeah, I guess they don’t have signals anymore. Back in the days of stealing signs from the catcher, the runner on second would do something subtle like put his hands on hips or scratch his nose, not wave his arms like the world’s worst spy.
I am a Mariners fan and I have no problem with this. It’s part of the game. It’s only cheating if you’re using some foreign object to relay signals (like a smart watch or banging on a trash can).
But players giving signals to each other using body language is a key part of the game, and figuring out a pitcher’s signs and using that same body language to relay them is a tradition and explicitly okay and normal. If players are figuring out your signals as a pitcher, you need to hide them better.
Wasn’t it just a week ago the Cubs destroyed the Cardinals with the 8 home run game?
Now, after a brutal day at work and so eager for a Cubs/Yankees game at my favorite Chicago sports bar, they’ve turned off the game sound and the Cubs are losing 11-0.
Baseball is a funny game.
Bellinger led the Yanks to victory with a 3 homer game.
I’m 3 drinks in but I think I saw an advertisement from one of the Cubs sponsors that you can turn in a Bellinger jersey tomorrow for 30% off new Cubs merchandise!
Cal Raleigh hit 2 HRs today, bringing him up to 38. One of them was a grand slam.
The only player to have more HRs before the All Star break is Barry Bonds.
And only one behind Bonds so he could even break the record. Raleigh at the moment is really on a “go big or go home” streak, I think it in his last 9 games all his hits have been out the ball park.
If things continue like this Raleigh could break Bond’s record of 73 home runs in a season and still lose out to Judge for MVP.
Now that’s cold! I love it.
And he would have had 4 if Kyle Tucker hadn’t robbed him of one
One of my favourite trivia questions is, who was the first pitcher to win a Cy Young without winning 20 games?
Tom Seaver
Also yesterday Vladdy Guerrero got his 1000th hit. Guerrero is the 10th player with 1000 hits in a Jay uniform; number one is Tony Fernandez, with 1583. Given that Guerrero is 26 and under contract basically forever, it seems certain that barring a terrible injury he will crush that record with room to spare. He’ll likely be 8th by the end of this year, passing Joe Carter and Damasa Garcia.
Despite only being 26, and NOT being top ten in games played, he’s remarkably high on the Jays career lists, even though the team’s had some very good players.
If Cal Raleigh hits 74 home runs, he wins the Award. Judge will lose votes for having just another season like he does.
Even if he comes close, he probably does. Judge holds the unofficial “non-steroidal” record, at “only” 62. If Raleigh surpasses that, he’s the story of the year, and if he starts passing the Sosa and McGwire marks, much less the Bonds mark, even better.
I’d say he would definitely be SI Sportsperson of the Year.
Yankees lost today but one thing to note: Judge hit his 350th career home run.
He’s the fastest to 350 by games played. Beat Mark McGwire by 200 games.
That’s just unreal.
OTOH Judge plays half his games in a very hitter friendly park. McGwire not so much.
180 homers at home, 170 on the road. It’s not like Judge is hitting wallscrapers and porch jobs.
That is a silly statement, Judge doesn’t hit cheap homers.
I don’t have full break down of his career home runs. This article breaks down 60 of his home runs in 2022. It shows pretty clearly that it’s not an advantage. He doesn’t hit that many to the short porch in right.
Thank you all. The article indirectly suggests that a lot of people thought, wrongly, as I did.
