MLB: July

Sez the TV guys, that was the Yankees’ first homer since the All Star break, and their first by a righty hitter in over a month. Hard to believe, but then that’s a team of bench players out there.

The bottom of the 6th in this Detroit/Philly game is crazy.
Walk
Reached on throwing error,
Reached on sac bunt that turned into a hit.
Out
Deep sac fly dropped,
Walked in a run on a wild pitch 4th ball
Double play ball to first inexplicably thrown home with throwing error
Another walk in a run
Grand slam

and still only one out

We’ll see how it goes. Your batters are facing a rookie, albeit a good one, in Tony Cingraini. He’s got a live fastball that has some movement and he gets it up there in the 95-96 mph range, but his other pitches are a work in progress. He’s just a kid at 23 and is only going to get better but he’s prone to giving up homers at times as he throws so many fastballs, so I’m a little scared with some of the power hitters you have.

Watch him pitch though, I think he’s going to be a good one for a long time. The thing I really like about him is he never seems to get rattled, which is an important trait in a starting pitcher, IMO.

We really need to get our bats going like they were against the Giants. That would be nice.

Turns out the pitching in today’s game is even better than Friday’s. I think the rules dictate that someone has to score eventually, though. Extra innings for the Dodgers and Reds.

Holy cow! First walk-off for Puig! Dodgers win!

And then he slid into home! I love Puig. It should be annoying, if it was another player on a different team it might be, but it’s Puig, and it’s awesome.

Dodgers have gone 26 of their last 32, a franchise record, and also struck out 20 times…also a franchise record :dubious:. Still, a win is a win, and LA is 2.5 up and leading the NL West. Yanks come to town on Tuesday too. Should be fun.

Ah well. Ce la vie. Really wanted that one though. Was a great series pitching wise throughout for both teams. Goddammit.

And just to show how petty I really am, here’s a video of Pirates rookie Gerrit Cole eating his booger in the dugout…

That…was ugly.

But we’ll take it. Go, Puig!

Indeed that was a crazy third of an inning. But that wasn’t even the craziest shit I saw in that game. Thiswas.

Could someone with more baseball IQ than I have (that would be each and every one of you) please explain something to me? I was reading an article this morning about Yasiel Puig’s walk-off homer yesterday in extra innings. The article references two different former major league players who are pissed off about the fact that Puig chose to slide into home plate at the end of his home run trot. Puig noted during a post-game interview that he did so because he’d had a former teammate hurt himself jumping on home plate, and we all know the Kendrys Morales story, but I’m not even sure that’s relevant.

Since when did a walk-off celebration become fair game for criticism? How is being happy about winning the game suddenly not respecting the game? And why is a slide into home disrespectful as opposed to “merely” jumping up and down about it? Greg Swindell and Danny Graves are calling for someone to bean Puig for his so-called disrespect, suggesting he just hasn’t earned the right to celebrate like that. If Puig had run over to the Reds’ dugout and danced in their faces, sure. But this strikes me as petty, way-over-the-top criticism about someone that people just don’t like.

So what, if anything, am I missing?

It’s showboating, and of a rather silly kind. Some celebrating is OK during a home-run trot (a fist-pump, maybe), but sliding into home is completely unnecessary. (If Puig said it was because he didn’t want to injure himself, that’s ridiculous. He’d be much more likely to hurt himself sliding than jumping onto home plate, and even that wouldn’t really be necessary.)

I think what I’m asking is why sliding into home plate is considered any more demonstrative than jumping onto the plate or the flinging of a helmet or imitating riding a horse coming around third or any number of other silly things players do following a walk-off that have not ever had people call for a beaning.

It’s mild showboating, and the complaints are mostly people trying to fill airtime or column inches.

It was a walk off HR at the end of a very very hard fought extra innings game where LA looked like it was on the ropes more often than not. It’s not like he is the first player ever to slide into home in celebration, and jumping onto home is a common occurrence after a walk off and no one has to fear getting drilled for that.

People are pissed because Puig is young. Ricky Henderson slid into home when he broke the runs record, but he was a hall of famer so it’s ok. Swindell called Puig out on twitter for not having earned his stripes yet and being disrespectful. Fuck that. Puig loves the game and get’s happy when good stuff happens. He didn’t rub it in anyone’s face. He didn’t stare down the pitcher or smack talk the Reds. He just celebrated winning a game that looked like it was probably going to be a loss. Why is that a bad thing all of a sudden?

Oh, and then he signed his jersey and gave it to a kid in the stands. He’s a monster.

I guess this is one of those unwritten rules of baseball that nobody’s ever heard of until somebody breaks it.

They should really write some of these unwritten rules down.

Fuck Yasiel Puig. He beat my team. I hate him!

After the past weekend’s series against the Cubs, I think we can all agree on one thing with regards to the San Francisco Giants:

The starting pitching is back, baby!

Unfortunately, the wheels have fallen off in every single other facet of the game. While i’m not yet ready to throw in the towel, I am now mentally prepared to accept the fact that the team will not achieve it’s ultimate goal this season.

However, it’s still possible for this to be a Successful Season. It’s one of the great things about having a bitter rival; even if the Giants don’t win, it’s still a win as long as the Dodgers *also *don’t win.

Go WhoeverisplayingtheDodgers today!!!

Because Dodger fans are a generous bunch, we will oblige you today. I give you my word that the Dodgers — based solely on your heartfelt desire — will not come up with a “w” today.

You’re welcome!
