Not unusual…in this case, a run scored on a passed ball, but could also be an error, a wild pitch, a GIDP, a balk…
Gotta feel a little bad for the Astros, though–.

I figured that must have something to do with it. I didn’t hear the PB when it happened, so it wasn’t until I heard them mention it during the post-game that it occurred to me.
According to the post-game guys, this was apparently the first time ever that a team won a game by scoring 4 or more runs with only 1 hit. Though they did mention that the White Sox once won a game by scoring 4 runs on no hits.
Yankees pitcher Andy Hawkins pitched a no-hitter against the White Sox in 1990, but lost by a score of 4-0 (due to three errors and two walks). He even lost credit for the no-hitter after the definition was changed the following year.
It’s astounding, heartbreaking, how bad the Jays are.
Blue Jays WAR by player type:
Position players: 13.5
Starting pitchers: 0
Relief pitchers: 6.5
That’s right. Toronto’s starting rotation, collectively, is no better than if they’d waited until March 31 and just picked five guys off the waiver wire.
As many huge holes as the lineup has, they’re 6th in the AL in scoring runs so you can’t really complain about that, and the bullpen has been fine. Even a so-so performance from the starting rotation and they’d be right in the mix.
Now, the Mariners game today was at the complete opposite end of the spectrum - 12 runs on 13 hits.
A month ago, the Dodgers were 12 games below .500. Today, they are .5 games back and surging.
Go Blue!
Nationals continue their free fall. I actually couldn’t bring myself to turn on the game Sunday, a first for me, and just checked the score later. oof.
Once the Nats are fully out of it, I’ll cheer for the Pirates.
Damn, the Rays have won 17 of their last 19. Gonna be a fun 4-game set in Boston.
Ryan Braun suspended for the remainder of the season
The first of many to come?
I do wonder, where does the suspension for “the remainder of the season, plus any postseason games” come from? I thought it was 50 games for a first offense, 100 for a second. Are they making things up as they go along now?
I think because his 50 gamer was overturned, but nobody bought his excuse, they needed a harsher punishment.
From Deadspin.
One factor is Braun waived his right to appeal. Therefore he gets a lighter sentence. One could also make the argument that the 2011 case, which Braun won on appeal, was the first offense. It appears that MLB is just making it up as they go along. Hopefully any implicated players won’t use that as the basis for any appeals.
In light of this A-Rod’s recent setback seems a little too convenient.
Braun went to MLB and gave up the goods, so it’s a negotiated deal. I don’t see a problem with that.
A little? That douchenozzle is as dirty as they come. Everything associated with him is fucking shady. I’m no Yankees fan but the organization should (and likely will) drop him and his bloated contract if they can find an out, which I think they can find due to his association (AGAIN) with PED’s.
Anyway, an interesting twist in the Reds v Giants series starting tonight…tomorrow they play a doubleheader to make up the fourth game of their previous series that was rained out in Cincinnati. So they will play a game at 7:10pm Tuesday, then play another after that one is over, with the Reds being the home team and wearing their home uniforms in the second game. That doesn’t happen too often.
That sounds entertaining. Can they get the PA announcer to act enthusiastic about the Reds when announcing the players? Will the Reds get walk-up music?
(I know, I know…but it would be amusing!)
Good.
I’m not sure it makes any difference, which makes me doubt they’re related. I guess we’ll see.
I’d be happy to see it, but I doubt it’s going to be possible. As far as I know there’s no contractual basis for voiding the deal based on PED use and he might be able to argue that the Yankees knew what he was doing, or should have known. Maybe if he gets suspended for a year and can’t wriggle out of it he’ll accept a buyout worth half or two-thirds of what he’s owed or something like that.
You know what- I’m going to take that back. It’s possible the Yankees think they have a tiny shred of getting out of this contract and that that chance goes away if he comes back and plays for them with this suspension hanging over his head.
That would be hilarious. I can’t imagine the “real” home team is going to make any concessions to the “declared” home team in any way other than the uniforms, though. The oldschool streak in me likes doubleheaders, which used to be a regular thing, but the realist in me goes “Damn…those guys are really going to abuse their rosters…”
Seriously, we’re talking baseball starting at 7pm and ending who knows when. 2am is a possibility! And then they play again at ten the following night. The managers of both teams can’t be too pleased with this arrangement.
Man, Braun finally fesses up after all that “poor old innocent me, being framed by MLB, the courier dude, the blood labs”, and anyone else he could blame. In the end he was just a liar.
Hope Brewers have a good rest of the season, and show they don’t need the cheater.
They won’t, and they do.
They are 13 and a half games out and aren’t coming back from that. Not with the three teams at the top of the division playing so well.
While I do support going after these guys, it’s fair to note (as other people have already done) that MLB’s process here is pretty shady. I hope we at least get a thorough accounting of the evidence against the players who get suspended.
