I have been reading in a couple of places that they are considering (or at least some people are pushing for, who knows what Bud is actually thinking) about implementing a central replay authority similar to what the NHL has. I wouldn’t be opposed to that since it would take pressure off of umps, wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg, and wouldn’t slow the game down considerably.
I don’t want robot umps calling balls and strikes, but out/safe calls need to be made correctly and you might talk me into fair/foul calls too.
Yeah, that was a total brainlock. It’s one thing that the ump couldn’t tell if Wise held onto the ball, but the fact that he didn’t even ask to see the ball as he got out of the stands is ridiculous. It’s one more thing that’ll get piled onto the case for expanded replay, which is fine with me.
I mean, what was the point of the ump running out the play if he wasn’t even going to look for the ball?
I’m sure it’s true that bad umpiring just gets noticed more now what with every game being televised, and I am somewhat of a baseball traditionalist (although I favor the DH), but I’m not anti-replay. In fact, I think Bobby Valentine is on to something about having a completely computerized umpiring crew calling balls, strikes, fair, foul, etc.
ETA: If this winds up meaning that Ethier will miss the Home Run Derby, I wonder if Kemp will reconsider inserting Bryce Harper, since that seems to be news-worthy.
CC will probably not miss more than 3 starts. I think the Yankees will be just fine. Just looking at the standings, Toronto and Baltimore might be coming back down to earth. The O’s are still in 2nd, but they’re 4-6 in their last 10 and on the negative side of run differential.
This is the first time ever that the Giants had a triplicate shutout sweep over the Dodgers. The park was electric and there were a few brooms in the stands. it was awesome to be there.
It reminded me, a little bit, of the “Brian Johnson game” in 1997, another sweep of the Dodgers that put the Giants into a tie for 1st place with them before going on to win the division (although that game was much later in the season). That was an electric Candlestick Park moment! Rod Beck, R.I.P.
I was at that game! god, that was awesome. Top of the 12th, Dodgers had bases loaded and nobody out, and Beck got Eddie Murray to hit into a 1-2-3 DP. (IIRC). And then Brian Johnson hits the walk-off, and the place absolutely went nuts.
I’m really looking forward to the Reds 11 game West coast trip…4 games against the Giants starting tonight, 3 against the Dodgers (and I really hope we kick their asses…old rivalries die hard!) and four against the miserable Padres.
The Reds have been pretty bad in recent years when they travel out west so with this current crop of players led by Votto, Phillips, Cueto, Bruce and Chapman I hope that they turn things around. We really need these games…the NL Central is getting tight. Its time to pull away.
San Diego’s Andrew Kashner has a no-hitter going through 6 against Houston. It’s his second start of the season and the third of his major league career (against 86 relief appearances).
Franklin Gutierrez has been battling injuries the past couple of years. It’s been a variety of maladies. He missed a good chunk of games with gastrointestinal issues, for example. He finally came back about a month ago and was slowly working his way into regular playing time. Tonight he was standing at first when he got hit in the face on a pick off move and had to leave the game. He is snake-bitten.
Four strait shutouts for the Giants, and a complete game one-hitter for Bumgarner. They’re starting to look a lot like the 2010 team, only with a better offense…
