Orioles took the series from the Phillies with two straight extra-inning victories.
Baltimore continues to live dangerously. They’ve now won 9 straight extra-inning games (a franchise record), and overall are 9-2 in extras and 11-5 in 1-run games. They remain in third place in the division, just behind the Rays (who swept Miami) and the New York Dollars (who swept the New York Disappointments).
Speaking of streaks, this has been a good time for the Nats to get a mini-streak (won 6 of their last 7) going. Hopefully they’ll still be on a tear when they play the Yankees this weekend.
The Nats have been scoring 4.4 runs per game over their past 28 games. It may not seem like much, but it’s a big improvement over the 3.4 runs per game they were scoring during their first 31 games. It means the Nats’ pitchers can win merely by being very good, rather than superheroes.
To consolidate those stats once again, the O’s are 4-1 in extra-inning games decided by one run, so they’re 16-6 in games that were either extra-inning or one-run games or both. That means they’re 18-20 the rest of the time.
The key from that article: “The new ownership working out a deal with Ethier feels almost like them making good on a covenant with the fans.” It kind of does. We like Ethier, we think he’s a solid, solid player (now, if not five years from now), and we don’t want to see him in anyone else’s uniform. And we like seeing proof that ownership really is willing to spend money.
The fangraphs article likened it to the Angels signing Torii Hunter. He was overpaid too, but only a little bit (they figure like $2million/year) and in the long run that overpay doesn’t really hurt the team because it’s not like $2 million any given year is going to prevent them from spending anymore.
What a fun day and night for the Dodgers. Ethier signs his extension, then the Dodgers go out and get great pitching from Aaron Harang (despite some very odd defense from Adam Kennedy), Ethier ties the game late with his 500th career RBI, and then former Angel Juan Rivera sends the next pitch over the fence for a three-run shot.
I can’t remember the last time I saw Dodger Stadium so full during a mid-week, mid-season game. The crowd was great. Just an all around fun night!
Nope. Pirates and Reds were tied for first as of yesterday and now with the Reds beating the Indians and the Buccos losing to the Orioles, the Reds are a game up again.
Harper’s season as an 19-year-old is literally unprecedented. Not positive he can keep it up, but if he can we are likely looking at the beginning of an all-time great career. The number of players that started as well as he has at his age and haven’t become Hall-of-Famers can be counted on one hand (and one of those because he got hit in the face with a pitch).
The Cards continue to struggle mightily, stuck at .500. Vastly frustrating results (if not team - they’re actually kinda fun to watch IMO). And now it seems likely Jaime Garcia is out for a good long time.
