MLB: June 2012

Eh, I read that weird. When he said “Pirates in first place” I thought he meant all by their lonesome, which they never were. I’m pretty sure only the Reds and the Cards have been in first in the Central all season long.

Its fun seeing the Pirates play decent baseball for a change. And the Cards…well, they can just stay where they are. They’ve had their successes.

Eh, so have the Reds. Let’s all give it up and start rooting for the Cubs? They could certainly use the help…

There’s rooting for the underdog, and then there’s throwing away your vote…

I picked up both these guys on one of my fantasy teams, just Trout on the other, so I’ve been paying close attention. They’ve helped me climb back into contention. Trout’s success has really helped the Angels look like the team they were supposed to be before the season started. The Nats are doing well too. Neither is putting up these numbers for a cellar dweller. The future of baseball is bright if these guys can keep it up.

The number of position players who became major league regulars at age 19 at all is, at least in modern times, a pretty short list.

According to mlb.com, since integration you have four position players who played enough to qualify for the batting title:

Al Kaline - 1954
Rusty Staub - 1963
Robin Yount - 1975
Ken Griffey Jr. - 1989

That’s it. Three Hall of Famers and one darned good ballplayer.

It was a bit more common pre-WWII.

FWIW, Harper is only the fourth teenager to hit a homer at Fenway - following Mantle, Kaline, and Yount. He’s as scary-good as Strasburg.

As a Dodgers fan, I’m really pleased. He’s a really solid guy (currently 58 RBIs, without Kemp in the lineup for a chunk of the season - what does that project to over a season, 120+?) If he’d gone into free agency he could have likely gotten more. This is not like signing Andruw Jones. Great season so far for the Blue, and Tommy still lives!

A little something going on in San Francisco tonight. The great catch, which always seems to accompany a perfect performance, just was made by Gregor Blanco.

I was mistaken, with tonight’s RBI Ethier is at 55, not 58.

Didn’t Tony C debut as a teen?

I thought Melky’s catch a few innings before was going to be the catch of the game. Boy, was I wrong - Blanco’s was really something!

Most no-nos and perfectos have Web Gems along the way.

Woo hoo!

Matt Cain is perfect! (the 1st Perfect Game in franchise history)

That last play was *not *easy!

Did Jon Miller just say that was the first ever perfect game by a Giant pitcher?

Matched record for K’s in Perfecto. (14 with Koufax)

Yep.

Joe

Yes he did. (surprised me too)

Amazing performance by Cain. That’s the second this season and since he tied the record for strikeouts in a perfect game, I’d think this has to go down as an elite performance even among perfect games.

What a great game! Holy Smokes! and the first perfect game in Giants history? Wow! Cain looked blown away when the told him that.
