Old thread here.
Giants can’t seem to lose, Dodgers can’t seem to get a decent streak going, Arizona is thinking of switching to AA ball. Such is life in the NLWest at the start of June.

Damn. On Sunday, Mariners’ rookie pitcher Roenis Elias, who had never pitched above AA ball before making the team out of spring training, out-duelled reigning AL Cy Young winner, Max Scherzer, holding the Tigers to just 3 hits in a complete-game, 4-0 Mariners win.
This kid is great.
On the same day Rubby De La Rosa (who had some cameos with the Dodgers but is still legally a rookie) looked as good as any Red Sox pitcher has recently. Buchholz and his fragile psyche can take all the time they need coming back.
Brock Holt, wherever the hell he came from, had 4 doubles in 4 AB’s (plus a walk) - must be a record, right? Good to see two more guys get their first MLB hits yesterday too, even if they’re just in for a brief visit.
Aaaand the Mariners kick the Yankees’ ass, 10-2, helped along by Kyle Seager’s FOUR extra-base hits: a HR, two triples, and a double.
Can he count that as hitting for the cycle?
He beat the Yankees. He can count it as walking on water!
Cardinals still haven’t scored this month. Have only had one runner to second base, I think.
And yet, somehow, with zero offense to speak of and only 2 games over .500, if the season ended today they would get the second wild card? Odd.
Could they change the scoring on one of those triples to a single with a two-base error?
It actually sounds like one of those was similar. Was one of the triples that odd play by Jeter where he thought the ball was foul?
Brandon Workman gets six games for *not *hitting Longoria, and Mike Carp goes on the DL with a broken bone in the foot he got hit in.
Meanwhile David Price and Joe Maddon walk the streets as free men. Ain’t no justice, man, no justice.
Sounds like. From here:
I also like this bit about the Mariners’ improved offense:
Mariners come from behind, down 4-0, to win 7-5 against Atlanta. Four wins in a row!
I don’t expect the M’s to make the playoffs; I’ll just be happy if they finish above .500.
I’ll be happy if they win two more against the Braves, especially if the Nationals also win two more against the Phillies.
Looks like Joe Nathan decided this was the perfect time for his career to shit the bed.
The Reds seem to own The Freak. He should have never let go of the goth mullet.
Seriously though, this next few weeks is it for the Redleggers. Either get better or (God forbid) get worse. I don’t wish to see a repeat of this season or last season, and since the Reds did absolutely NOTHING to get better from last year to this one, and with injuries still plaguing them with Votto and Latos, they have to start putting up or shutting up NOW.
The prospect cupboard is bare. Latos, Cueto, Leake and Simon are ALL free agents after next year. There’s no way the Reds can sign them all, and tough decisions will have to be made.
That said, if they can beat up on the team with the best record in MLB and get on a bit of a roll, then perhaps they can make some noise.
Walt Jocketty is seriously overrated as a player acquisition guy with the Reds I must say.
Jonathan Singleton had an eventful 24 hours:
Called up to the major leagues
Signs a $10 million, 5-year contract (I don’t know that I like that for the Astros, don’t think he’s quite that much of a can’t-miss)
2nd inning strikeout
3rd inning error
3rd inning RBI walk (!)
5th inning strikeout
8th inning error
8th inning home run.
This whole “unwritten rules” thing is getting a bit crazy lately.
Ryan Zimmerman is back from the DL for the Nats, playing LF for the first time in his career, he goes 2 for 4 against the lowly Phillies.
Don Zimmer has died. R.I.P. One of the great baseball characters of all time.
Well, they did it again today, winning 2-0 behind Iwakuma’s pitching.
