I like Cervelli. He never got a real chance.
Agreed. Love the windows looking out on downtown though. Kinda like the lime green walls too.
Fish tanks are kinda neat too.
Just listening on the radio for the first inning not watching, is Johnson not looking sharp or is Stl just hitting really well?
37,000 seats? I like it. Better to more often have a full stadium and a handful of people who can’t get in, than a few huge crowds and a lot of half-empty games.
His defense dropped after his first season and he is injury prone. Seemed like every time he got on any kind of a roll he got hurt. He is a good enough backup when not on the DL but that is all he is. With Romine injured Cashman got some quick major league depth at Catcher. Chris Stewart can’t hit at all but he is a very good catcher with around a 36% throw out rate. Seems like a good move.
Never heard of him. I’ll give him a chance…
And that is why defense matters. Ramirez/Reyes, defensive comedy gold.
I despise the new Miami stadium. That thing will age more quickly than the Kingdome and Astrodome.
Ok, Miami or not, the lime green has got to go. Not to mention that the advertising banner behind home plate looks like it’s falling off already.
The new look Cardinals are looking pretty good so far. I do sort of want to see Miami hit a home run so that hideous thing in left-center can spring into action, but I’m also feeling some baseball-purist-ish guilt about that.
Is Miami going to end up an extreme pitchers park? It seems to just be crushing fly ball power.
I think so. The previous stadium was a pitcher’s park and this one is bigger. Stanton is going to lose a lot of home-runs here.
You’d assume so but there are other sea level stadia that are good for homers. We’ll have to wait and see - it depends on winds and air movement in the stadium’s bowl, the lights, background visibility, foul ground, etc. And a stadium that helps the pitchers in one part of the season can murder them in another.
Yeah, it’s hard to say much based on one day but Stanton hit two balls that are HR in many ballparks that died in Jay’s glove last night. They claim that with the roof closed but the windows open the ball carries better, but I’m a bit dubious. 418 to center is pretty deep for a sea-level high-humidity environment.
Lance Berkman was pretty hilarious when asked about the new ballpark.MLB -- Cards win, criticize Marlins' new park - ESPN
Oh, and the baseball was pretty good. Lohse looked like his “let 'em hit it and hope we catch it” self and just about everyone was having pretty solid ABs (save Matt Holliday). The lineup shouldn’t be too much of a problem for the Cards this season unless injuries derail a few of the old bodies.
And Angel Hernandez blew an easy call, so he’s already in mid-season form.
Roy Halladay is pretty good.
Verlander too.
Aside from a meatball he hung up to Bautista, Justin Masterson pitched a great game today as well.
Too bad Perez gave up three in the 9th. Doesn’t he know that anything that happens in game number one is fraught with consequence for the rest of the season?
Nice opening day extra innings affair in Cleveland. Bottom of the 12th, 4-4, bases loaded, 1 out. Toronto brings 44 year old Omar Vizquel in off the bench as a 5th infielder. He doesn’t figure in the ensuing DP to end the inning, but still, good stuff for Day 1!
Johnny Cueto is a fucking stud. Three hits in seven innings, Reds roust the Miami (???) Marlins 4-0. Good Opening Day Redleggers!
Well, it took almost two years for Jose Valverde to blow a save, so I suppose I’m okay with that. Get it out of your system and save everything else this year, mmmkay?
Astros will be able to finish the day without a loss. That’s always positive.
