Listening to the NYY/KC game which aired on FS1 last night. A-Rod sounds fantastic as an analyst. He’s doing another game Saturday with Joe Buck.
I don’t really like A-Rod (as a person and a cheat) but even I will admit he did a good job last night.
ARod has been good on TV, both in the booth and in the studio. I don’t like him, either, but he definitely knows baseball. And knows how to talk about baseball.
Anyone know the rule about how many games a team can play without having an off day? The Cubs and Brewers were rained out today and the next time the Brewers are in town is Sept. 8-10. The Cubs don’t have a day off during a period of 20 days starting on August 22.
Yes. Milwaukee is close to Chicago, but the Cubs have 10 concerts scheduled for Wrigley in the summer of 2017 so finding a mutual off day to make up the game is going to be difficult.
Since it’s the Cubs, Wrigley, and $$$ a traditional doubleheader tomorrow won’t work and I don’t think they could do a day/night doubleheader tomorrow since ESPN has a Sunday night game already scheduled.
That doesn’t sound that unusual. Right now the Jays are in a 17-straight-day run of games, and later in the year they will play 20 in a row (July 14 to August 2.)
Yeah, the Orioles have a 20-day stretch in June, and another in July-August.
I’m thinking, although Google isn’t helping, that 20 games is the most a team can play without a day off.
However, the Cubs/Brewers game has been rescheduled for July 6. Oddly enough, if they would have just delayed the game, they could have gotten it in. I’m quite surprised they didn’t just delay the game. I can remember one day game, with a 1:20 PM first pitch scheduled, that didn’t start until around 4 PM. I’d worked the overnight shift before that game and there was no way I was hanging around Wrigley with nothing to do except stand in the corridors of Wrigley and drink beer for hours.
Apparently this is from an old CBA, but according to this 2003 thread on another board
I didn’t research if its the current rule in place, but it sounded interesting.
The thread also notes an instance when the Phillies played 27 games on 27 straight days.
I believe the only rule about consecutive days is for the original schedule. Once they start rescheduling they try to give a day off in what would be a long run, but if they can’t, they can’t. They try to make sure all games are played and will definitely play a game after the season if it is needed to determine playoffs – that can get complicated if there are teams that are tied or would be, so they slip the games in if they possibly can.
Here’s the 2012-2016 CBA on PDF. I cannot find a link to the 2017-2021 agreement.
. . . Impeach the Nationals’ bullpen!
The Brewers are annoyed that the Cubs called the rain out so early. I tend to agree with them, while no one knows for certain that the rain would have completely cleared up as it did yesterday, they could have delayed the start of the game and waited it out.
Cardinals are back to being mediocre again.
Heh heh! Good one.
Long season though. Long season.
If I were a Nats fan my fear would be playing in a division with weak competition. They ought to win the NL East blindfolded. But they need competition to make them play well come September and October and I don’t know if they’re gonna have it.
I’m not sure that really matters. Even with the lopsided schedule every team plays more games out of division than in.
The Giants have finally remembered how to play baseball, having gone 7-3 in winning their last three series. Unfortunately, they’ve only been able to catch up a single game in the standings…but at least they’re back to being fun to watch.
Baby steps…baby steps…
Yanks may have to put Tanaka on the DL, not sure what is going on but he has been terrible for a while now. Currently, Cessa is our best pitching prospect ready for the majors, though Chance Adams has a real high end and might be able to help the team by late June. He is already in AAA after starting in AA. Every game this year has been a good outing.
Red Sox are looking at trading for Todd Frazier to fill in at 3B. But he’s not hitting any better this year than any of the other stiffs they’ve had to put out there while waiting for Rafael Devers to grow up, so I would vote against giving up anything for him.
Todd Frazier sucked last year and he is sucking this year. Isn’t Pablo Sandoval supposed to return soon? The only way I’d take Frazier is in a trade for Panda, straight up. Which will not happen.
Dodgers and Cardinals set all sorts of records last night.
*Tuesday’s game was the first since at least 1913 in which both teams allowed four or fewer hits while striking out 14 or more. It also marked just the third time in Major League history where both teams’ pitchers allowed four or fewer hits in a game of at least 12 innings.
The Cardinals matched a franchise record by recording 19 strikeouts in the game. However, they became the first team in Major League history to strike out at least 19, allow three or fewer hits and lose.*
