MLB: May 2023

Their generic comment doesn’t really mean much. The likely reason is that they are simply risk averse. It’s not like firing Kuiper really changes a lot, and after all, they might not even have A’s games to broadcast in the very near future.

Story on preliminary stadium plan agreement between the A’s and Nevada officials:

Meantime, historic team futility continues with Tuesday night’s game. From ESPN:

“Oakland dropped to 10-40, which projects to a 32-130 record. That would be the most losses for any team in a season since the 1899 Cleveland Spiders went 20-134.”

Ideally, the legislature turns down the stadium plan and suspense mounts on whether the team can match the Spiders’ achievement. Can James Kaprielian outpitch Crazy Schmidt? The world wonders…

I’m not a mind reader. He clearly says the N word, I can’t speculate as to why. I do know it’s not a word I would say when I meant to say “Negro.” I don’t think anyone says the N word inadvertently if it’s not part of their regular vocabulary.

The Rays were down 10-1 by the 5th inning against the Blue Jays Tuesday night, so they decided to let an outfielder and a catcher finish the rest of the game on the mound. They allowed another 10 runs. Raley had pitched one inning in a previous game; Bethancourt has pitched a few innings each of the last few seasons. Their lifetime ERA’s are well into the double digits. Blue Jays 20-1 Rays (May 23, 2023) Box Score - ESPN

And a game time of only 2:31, not bad!

Raley actually struck out Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Of course, he then later gave up a grand slam to him.

That’s gotta be a unique accomplishment, right? “Only position player to pitch in a game and both strike out and surrender a grand slam to the same hitter.”

As of this very moment, there are eight teams with worse records than the Nationals. Pretty amazing, when you think about it.

At the exact one third point of the season, the A’s have won ten games. They are on a pace to be easily the worst team of the modern era.

They’ve allowed 190 runs more than they have scored, which would be really, really bad for a full season, and which would put them on a pace to absolutely annihilate the existing record. The team’s BEST starting pitcher, JP Sears, has no wins; I know that sounds weird but it’s literally true.

The A’s have one winning streak of two games. They have literally no one game losing streaks. They have won no blowouts, no games by five or more runs, but have been blown out 17 times.

I am not a bobble head collector but it looks like the Cubs screwed up tonight.

I’ve been mentally calling them the F’s for awhile now.

Unbelievable play by Red Sox pitcher Kutter Crawford last night.

Put another way: in 39% of their losses, they’ve been blown out.

A historically ugly start to their season, for certain.

Indeed. That’s a helluva play.

There’s something that I’m wondering about this play. Normally, a fielder has the right to field the ball, and a baserunner must avoid the fielder. If a baserunner prevents a fielder from a clear path to the ball, that’s interference and the runner is called out.

But in this play, the ball was obviously deflected. In that case, does now the runner have the ‘right-of-way’ on the basepath? The pitcher appears to make contact with the batter/runner, and you can see the runner pointing back at the pitcher after the play. In fact, there was enough contact to knock the glove off the pitcher’s hand, and the contact appears to knock the runner offstride just a bit. Should this have been obstruction by the fielder?

You’re right it’s not interference because the pitcher already played the ball. Obstruction is a judgement call and I guess the umpire thought the contact was incidental.

No it should not. The runner was not in his path, he was in the field of play. Look at the point of contact. The runner is traveling with one foot inside the foul line. He is supposed to be in the lane painted OUTSIDE the foul line.

Good catch. I didn’t notice that. He was clearly not in the running lane.

The A’s were destroyed 10-1 by the Astros today - the Astros hit seven home runs - and so are now officially on less than a 30-win pace.

Esteury Ruiz didn’t play for the A’s today. I hope he’s not hurt because he actually is fun to watch, and the A’s fans need something. 27 stolen bases already (in just 30 attempts.)

The batter only has to be inside that three foot lane to avoid interfering with the throw. Rule 5.09 (a)11: The batter is out when … In running the last half of the distance from home base to first base while the ball is being fielded to first base, he runs outside … the three foot line or inside … the foul line, and in the umpire’s judgment in doing so interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base.

The contact occurred before the throw. I’ve only ever seen them call this if the ball hits the batter/runner/

The Royals shutout the Cardinals today, 7-0. They opened the game up shutting the first 21 Cardinal batters down with 7 perfect innings split between a 1 IP opener (Staumont) and 6 IP of a follower (Mayers).

In more important Royals news, I was able to take my 92 year old step-father to the game on Saturday with my 3 boys. The weather was absolutely perfect, Salvy Perez hit a HR that absolutely none of us saw because we were too busy taking in the moment, and all 7 of us (aged 2, 5, 7, 40, 47, 79 and 92) made it all 9 innings. Baseball is the best.
