MLB: May

The Yankees and Mets play starting tonight so ESPN will be back covering baseball.

If ESPN on TV is anything like ESPN Radio, I’m not surprised. On the radio they spend the first part of the baseball season talking about nothing but basketball, then straight into NFL Draft coverage, and then the last half of the baseball season going on about the NFL and college football, before they start talking about the NBA again.

Except for when the Yankees play the Red Sox or the Mets.

Stories floating around the Mike Moustakas might get sent back to the minors. He’s been horrible the past two years with the Royals. I’m not really sure a stint in the minor will fix what’s wrong, but he’s a liability to their club.

There’s all sorts of chatter that Jose Fernandez is heading for the DL. One story says he was vomiting prior to his outing against the Padres. I’d hope that an MLB pitcher would know enough to tell the manager that they’re sick. It’s a game in mid May, not the World Series. Another story talks about an MRI, which sounds far more serious than some stomach flu.

It just keeps getting worse, right now the story is that Fernandez will need season ending elbow surgery! I’m sure this isn’t the worst year for pitching injuries, but it really does seem like it. The Marlins were becoming a fun team to follow and this would be a death knell for this season if they lose Fernandez.

Heh heh. Felix Hernandez, after his first career ejection, must have suspected that the home plate ump in last night’s game was watching ESPN instead of home plate:

“I was asking about the Miami Heat score,” Hernandez quipped. “He didn’t even know.”

The Cubs literally lost in the 12th inning on a walk-off hpb

You’re killing me, guys

Dodgers finally gave Beckett some run support. We might just be getting things back into gear in L.A.

Perhaps spoken a tad too soon. At least we learned that Butera has a decent fastball.

Yu Darvish has started five games at home, and in four of them, the Rangers didn’t score a single run while he was in the game.

Tell me about it. I complained about his lack of run support back in the April thread.

He’s on my fantasy team, and while he keeps racking up the Quality Starts and the Strikeouts and just about every other stat imaginable, he now has 3 Wins from 8 starts this season despite an ERA of 2.33 and a WHIP of 1.101.

What’s even weirder is that the Rangers are leading the AL, scoring almost exactly 5 runs per game. None of them when Yu is on the mound, apparently.

A’s are surprisingly behind the Angels in RPG, I thought they were better than that. They scored 11 runs tonight, with a grand slam from Reddick and a 2-run homer by him as well.

Well, shit, you’re completely right.

It seems that when i was in Baseball Reference, and looking for the AL stats, i accidentally clicked on 2012 instead of 2014. I was pretty surprised myself at Texas’s lead, and never thought to check that i was on the wrong page.

Not only that, but 10 of their 11 came on homers:

A solo homer
A two-run homer
A three-run homer
And a Grand Slam

Sort of like the “cycle” of homers.

As of right now, the A’s are ahead of the Angels, and they must have been ahead of them when you typed this. Did you read the chart wrong?

No. Scoring 11 runs can change things.

Wow, I hope MLB has a review of the umpires in tonight’s A’s/Cleveland game. What a horrific job of officiating.

Orioles got beaten in a pitchers’ duel against Kansas City. KC pitcher Danny Duffy gave up a perfect game with two out in the seventh. As an Oriole fan, i was rooting for the Birds to get a hit and win the game, but i was also rooting for Duffy.

Now watching a close one between the Rangers and the Blue Jays.

Edit:

According to the announcers in the BAL-KC game, yesterday was a historic day for away teams in Majors, as 6 away teams had shut-out victories. Or, if you’re a glass-half-empty sort of person, six home teams had shut-out losses.

I can’t remember how long since that’s happened, but apparently it’s quite a while.

Edwin Encarnacion just lost his grip on a bat, and there was quite an ugly little struggle over it in the stands. Some people are morons.

Meanwhile, Johnny Cueto is arguably the best pitcher in baseball. Hey, the Reds have been pretty bad so far, so I’m latching onto my bright spots!

This is an excellent article from Grantland that elaborates on his greatness. One thing I didn’t know that leapt right off the page of the article at me was the fact that only three baserunners have scored on Cueto so far this season.

I am really hoping the Cubs don’t trade Jeff Samardzija. This team isn’t making a playoff run this year, but they’re better than 14 games under .500
