MLB Playoffs

That would be awesome.

Also very good would be throwback Yankees-Dodgers.

Is that 4 wild pitches by Cantillo??

Nerves?

(Yes)

Rodon is a beast tonight.

Wasn’t Max Scherzer on the '23 Rangers? He’s a lock.

The LCS is a best of seven series. I don’t recall a team forfeiting after one game.

Cantillo was pretty bad his first few outings with Cleveland. Had a 7.63 ERA through August. He managed to get it down to 4.89 by the end of the year so he had a good September.

I was surprised to see him on the ALDS roster instead of Pedro Avila, but he didn’t get a chance to pitch.

He’s here now, hopefully just to eat up some innings somewhere or another. Also hopefully he got all his yips out tonight.

Thankfully Avila made the ALCS roster and that’s proving to be a good move.

4 wild pitches in 1/3 of an inning.

He faced 4 batters, walked 3, struck out 1. Threw 21 pitches, 7 for strikes.

According to a Xitter post: Joey Cantillo’s outing is only the second in postseason history in which a pitcher threw 4 wild pitches. The other: St. Louis’ Rick Ankiel in Game 1 of the 2000 division series vs. ATL.

Yeah, that hurt to watch.

Yah, I missed him. My quick and dirty odds:

1981 Dodgers: 1/8 if some far-future Veteran’s Committee decides to put Reggie Smith in.

1997 Marlins: 4/5, as in the very long term I’d consider Sheffield close to a lock and Brown having a decent chance, as I feel roiders will eventually get a re-evaluation.

2002 Angels: 1/25, mainly if Kevin Appier starts to look very good in comparison to today’s short-leashed starters, or K-Rod gets some sympathetic members on a future VC.

2015 Royals: 1/1,000 (the likes of Harold Baines and George Kell gives hope for even the most dire of cases note)

2016 Cubs: 1/5, almost all of that dependent on Jon Lester

I’m a bit pessimistic on Bryce Harper, but too early to lay any odds given his relatively young age.

Bruce Harper has yet to win the World Series. He signed with Philadelphia as a free agent the year before the Nats won.

Not that I disagree with the analysis but this is an odd inclusion on a list of WS winners

ETA: Ninja’d!

Sorry, I thought Philly won in 2022. This is in part due to BB Reference NOT listing the WS winners in their seasonal summary page, and my dyslexia. The 'Stros had a lot of the same guys as in their 1st championship year, so lock if everyone is forgiven for the sign stealing.

Nah, mostly a different team with 4 or 5 holdovers from 5 seasons earlier.

Of the new guys on the 2022 team, it’s way too early to judge on Kyle Tucker or Yordan Alvarez, though they are both more than solid players now. Pena maybe but not looking great for a HoF career.

Missed Verlander on the 2017 team, too. He’s more of a lock than Altuve.

Corey Seager is only 30, is at worst halfway to HOF numbers, is still an exceptional player, and has World Series MVP awards with two different francishes

Yanks take game one.
Weaver with a 5 out save.

Agree with the second at least. A Subway Series would mean that I stop caring about baseball a week earlier, which is a Bad Thing.

I’m curious which matchups are most interesting to people here, so let’s vote. Which ones would you watch? If you’ll watch no matter what, vote for all four. Define “watch” in whatever way makes sense to you, whether that’s actually watching games or just paying attention to who wins.

Which potential WS matchups would you watch?
  • Yankees vs Mets
  • Yankees vs Dodgers
  • Guardians vs Mets
  • Guardians vs Dodgers

I’ll watch the WS regardless, but my interest level in it decreases with the Yankees or Dodgers in it, and decreases even more if it’s both of them.

My general thought is that, if my team (Brewers) isn’t in, I like to see teams which haven’t won the championship in a long time, if ever. I guess that makes me a Guardians fan right now, followed by the Mets.

I’m a Yankees fan. The only other teams I’d be interesting in watching are the Nationals (because I live in the DC area; I used to be a season ticket holder) and the Padres (because I’m related to someone who works in their front office). If none of those teams is in the WS I won’t be interested enough to watch, except maybe an elimination game if I’m not doing anything else. I’ll definitely pay attention to who wins, regardless, but I didn’t include that when I voted; I only defined “watch” as deliberately tuning into a game.
