Man, I’m actually kind of numb. This is amazing.
And now, not only do the Seattle Mariners own the longest current playoff drought in the majors, thanks to tonight’s win by Washington they are also the only Major League team that has yet to make it to the World Series. Go, team!
To give you an idea of what being a long time Nats fan does to you, in game 1 of the series against the Cards, I thought, “I wonder what the score is in the other NL game?” Then I remembered that there wasn’t another NL game, we were in the championship.
Oh and congratulations Nationals, I’m rooting for you to win it all. Beat the Yankstros!
I happen to have 3 of those mini helmets that they sell at ball parks when you buy an ice cream sundae propped up on top of my work PC They are from the Long Island Ducks (Atlantic League), Yankees(AL) and Nats (NL). They’ve been there so long they are dust covered. Well, the Ducks won the Atlantic League championship already and the Nats just punched their World Series ticket. I’m hoping to go 3 for 3 and see the Yanks back in the Series after 10 years. Go Yanks, Go Nats!
Yanks are where they are realistically suppose to be right now, but blown opportunities make it feel worse.
There is a pretty strong chance tonight’s game will be postponed. The forecast for The Bronx doesn’t look good. Heavy rains starting around 3pm and going until 11pm.
The 2019 NLCS has to be one of the most lopsided playoff series of all time.
At no point in the series - not once - did St. Louis hold a lead.
Here is a fun fact. On May 30, the Washington Nationals and Detroit Tigers had both lost 32 games.
From that point on, they diverged just a little.
Washington fell below .500 on April 24 and didn’t get back to .500 until June 27 - their 80th game of the season, essentially halfway.
In theory a rain-out should help the Astros, since they get to skip out on the bullpen day and go straight to Greinke in game 4 and Verlander in game 5, but if they end up needing a game 6 it probably ends up being a bullpen game anyway (or Cole on short rest which doesn’t seem like a great idea).
You should get online and get a bet down then. Current WS odds, per Vegas Insider, (who unfortunately don’t cite a book(s)) have DC as a 2/1 bet. Astros are 7/5 and the Yankees are 9/4.
Scherzer/Strasburg/Sanchez are a pretty nifty 1-3 punch, to be fair. Should be a fun series, no matter if the Astros or Yankees end up winning the AL.
538 is giving Washington a 41 percent chance of winning, which seems a bit low to me since they will have a chance to set up their rotation.
Great odds on Washington. I’ll take that action as soon as I get home.
Game 4 officially rained out. Will be a Tanaka/Greinke rematch for game 4 Thursday, and a Verlander/Paxton rematch for Game 5.
The Astros and Yankees are better teams, and the ability to set up one’s rotation has a fairly limited window of advantage. It can really only give you a significant edge in one game - if the other team is unable to pitch their #3 starter a second time, and their #4 has to go twice.
Having said that it’s kinda pointless to set odds now unless you know who they’re playing. Honestly I think the Astros are a measurably better team than the Yankees, and Washington - or anyone - has a better chance if they play New York.
Very happy that Washington won. Just wanted to see more games.
It is a long drought until Spring training.
But they’re also giving the Astros a 41% chance of winning and the Yankees a 19% chance. Once the AL has a champion, the odds will change, but they currently rank the Astros and Nats as about equal.
That’s not how statistics work. The Astro’s 41% chance is taking into account the fact that they haven’t won the LCS yet.
Well, yeah, that’s why madmonk28 said “Once the AL has a champion, the odds will change.” Washingtoon’s 41 percent chance is an averaging of their chances against Houston and NY.
Barring an injury between now and then I’d assume against Houston the Nationals will see their chances dip maybe one or two percent, against New York maybe up one or two. Maybe not, the difference is pretty thin.
Not sure why Stanton is on the ALCS roster. It seems like he can’t play two days without getting hurt.
Obviously a big one tonight in NY. Still, the Yanks must beat one of the two Astro aces to advance. Not an easy task.
