Hey, it’s working so far…
As far as tonight goes, Mr. Posey was doing exactly what the third base coach told him to do. The third base coach was in error for sending him.
That game went almost exactly according to script for the Giants. The only ‘downer’ was the fact that Bumgarner no longer has a 0.00 World Series ERA, but I don’t think anyone associated with the team cares one little bit about that.
How about a couple of days of rain, so Bum can come back in Game Three or Four?
That happened in 1989, kind of. Because of the earthquake just before Game 3, there was a 10-day delay before the series resumed, and Game 1 winner Dave Stewart started Game 3.
And he won again.
And he was the Series MVP.
It still hurts.
They’re sticking to the script; they all picked the Royals again tonight. It sounds like they’re expecting negative hits from the Giants off of Ventura.
Well…we got one hit at least
Well that almost happened. Tonight’s game feels like a sleeping giant (no pun intended) has awoken. Hopefully AT&T Park, the home crowd, and Tim Hudson shuts them down.
Hunter Strickland scares me. He has great stuff but it’s not yet refined.
Tim Lincecum - I hope his injury isn’t serious.
What the heck happened with Strickland? Was he looking to start a fight?
They explained it on TV, what likely happened was that Strickland was apparently yelling at himself and walking near the 3B line when Perez was running by, and Perez thought Strickland was yelling at him. They then started yelling at each other.
Strickland shouldn’t have escalated it. Shut up, rookie.
A reliever with only 7 innings of major league experience, who has now given up 5 home runs in the postseason? What was that again about Bruce Bochy being a genius?
This has been a tension and drama free World Series so far.
Yeah…that wasn’t exactly a first-class example of bullpen use last night.
As for Bochy’s managerial genius: I’m willing to forgive one ‘bad game’…and that one was pretty bad. And now he’s got the perfect opportunity to show off that genius over the next 3-5 games, given

[li]For starting pitchers, he’s got one ‘ace’ and three ‘guys who can be pretty darn good…or not’[/li][li]Two of his releivers (Machi and Strickland) have veered way off into ‘can’t trust him’ territory[/li][li]Lincecum has gone from ‘bench warmer’ to ‘last best hope’…and has suddenly developed a wonky back[/li][/ul]
He’s going to have to be *very *creative with his pitching staff for the remainder of this series.
How would you feel about Petit starting Game 4, instead of Vogelsong?
I’m indifferent. But I think it’s premature to even have that discussion yet; we still need to get through Game 3. I’m hopeful that the extended rest will be all that Hudson needs to be able to go deep into the game, but if not I think Bochy will need to go to Petit tomorrow, and worry about Game 4 on Saturday.
Basically, they’re in a situation where they have 3 pitchers (Vogelsong, Petit, and Hudson) to combine for 2 games worth of ‘starting pitching’, and hope they can juggle relievers well enough to finish out the games. And then hope Bumgarner pitches another Bumgarnery-type game on Sunday.
And then of course, there’s always Tim Lincecum…something tells me he’s going to figure into this series in a big way before it’s over. I don’t know if I should be thrilled about that, or absolutely terrified . Probably both.
That sounds a lot like what Gandalf said about Gollum at the beginning of LOTR. ![]()
If he hadn’t tweaked his back last night I’d tend to agree. Now, we may not see him at all.
Both ends of the 6th inning were pretty tension- and drama-filled last night. Herrera getting Ventura out of that jam, and the Royals offense finally turning it on were exciting baseball.
Tim Lincecum feeling better. ETA: there’s a video that starts playing when you open that link, but there’s a text article as well.
Let’s hope.
It’s interesting…for the last 2 weeks, up to and including parts of Wednesday evening, the overwhelming sentiment regarding Lincecum was “we love the kid, but for god’s sake please don’t let him anywhere near the mound!” Then came the 6th inning, and now we’ve done a complete 180 (and I’m just about as guilty as everyone else).
I’m calling it right now: Tim Lincecum starts Game 7 on Wednesday night, gives his best ‘Barry Zito v. St. Louis Cardinals’ impression, and the Giants take it.
Because, baseball!
Slightly less implausible scenario: Vogelsong starts game 4 and stinks up the joint; Timmy comes in and throws 6 shutout innings as the Giants claw back into the game.
Joe Maddon opts out of his contract.
Wow. Are Don Mattingly’s days numbered?
