MLB: Postseason 2015

Ugh, Joey Bats ties the game, and then the game is delayed.

Oh dear god. Toronto is going to wind up burning Stroman today, which would leave RA Dickey to start game 7 on short rest. FFS, trust your bullpen to get a couple outs. Winning today is meaningless if we get destroyed tomorrow.

And that’s that. Hope the Royals can do it this time.

Can we just get the computer to call the fucking balls and strikes already. Christ.

I know what pitch you mean. No, that wasn’t a strike. BUT… I st and 3rd, no outs… A fantastic game all around though.

DOH! Double post!!

I agree, Locrian. A fantastic game indeed.

For a team that was regarded as “also-rans” at the start of the season, the Jays performed admirably. To come as far as they did–well, let’s just say that this Jays fan enjoyed the ride, and is looking forward to next year.

Thanks, Blue Jays! Enjoy the time off, and we’ll see you next year!

I don’t mind that.

Great season for the Jays.
See you next year guys.

That is nice. It does speak to a weird phenomenon that I think I’ve noticed: in my experience, David Wright is treated much more reverentially outside of NY than in it.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s well liked here, both in the press and on the streets, as you’d expect of an excellent and affable player who’s spent his entire career with the club. But there’s also an undercurrent of disappointment; it’s subtle, but as a group there’s a certain haziness/equivocation in our love for him because he’s not as great as we’d hoped. We were spoiled by his '07 and '08 seasons, then Citi Field opened and (seemingly) threw him for a loop, and his power numbers dropped, and how does he not already have his ticket punched for Cooperstown?

More to the point, there’s no mythologizing going on in NY. He’s not discussed in the kinds of tones that Jeter was. But whenever I happen to watch a Mets game with the other team’s booth on, he is treated like Jeter. They’re just thrilled to death that David Wright has graced the stadium with his presence. When he had his first game back this season after missing four months with the spinal injury, they Phillies announcers really were in full myth-making mode: “THE CAPTAIN is back!” and so forth. (Huh? No one calls him The Captain.)
There’s nothing wrong with that sort of thing, of course. It’s just strange to me.

In the Huh? Department, failed former Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. has just been hired by the Red Sox - as the new first base coach.

Huh.

The Darryl Strawberry Phenomenon?

Of course, with Darryl there was also that separated-at-birth thing…

My comment was primarily concerning offense only, Consider for a moment how many more wins Grienke and Kershaw might have had, for example if the offense had given them more than two runs of support in so many of their starts. In the post-season, our offense was non-existent.

Looking at these particular offensive stats:

Home Runs - RBI - Runs

Kemp 23-100-80
Ethier 11-55-50
Puig 11-38-30
Van Slyke 2-7-4
Crawford 2-30-23
Pederson 26-54-67

If these were my options for an outfield, I would go with Ethier, Kemp and either Puig (because of his cannon, offensive potential and speed) or Peterson, who is clearly the best defensive player (which would at least partially make up for Kemp’s defensive liabilities). The problem with Pederson, of course, is that he stopped hitting completely after the all-star game - 2hr and batted well below the Mendoza line w/170 strikeouts. He is as much an offensive liability as Kemp is defensively, a true inning killer.

If you would rather have Van Slyke or Crawford in the lineup instead of Kemp, all I can say is we’ll have to agree to disagree.

I just saw the WS dates/times. Not one day game! Geez, I love day games.

I guess it is all about the money, eh?

The issue is that NYC is a Yankees town, and thus Jeter got all the press and more high profile adulation. Wright is loved by a smaller number of people in NYC. Among Mets fans, though, he’s beloved; indeed, one of the criticisms of Sandy Alderson’s regime in the past was that Wright was forced to waste his talent on inferior teams.

I don’t have the Phillies call, but Howie Rose, the Mets radio announcer, said exactly those words after the home run. Gary Cohen, their TV play-by-play man said, “David Wright brings himself back into the lineup with thunder.” Not as good a catchline, granted, but certainly a sign of reverence. Here are Cohen and Rose calling the HR.

There hasn’t been a day game in the World Series for at least 2 decades.

I wasn’t aware of that.

But, I still love day games!

Oh, don’t act so surprised.

Not at all happy that David Ross intends to return to the Cubs. Schwarber needs to catch and carrying 3 catchers is silly. Schwarber can’t play outfield so he needs to be at catcher often

How much less offense would the Dodgers have had with AJ Ellis still catching instead of Grandal?
