MLB: September 2017

I found out in the Yankees case, by putting Hicks on the DL they where able to recall a player (Caleb Smith) immediately who had just gone down. If they did not put Hicks on the DL they would have had to wait 9 more days to call Caleb up.

I believe he needs 9 more hitless ABs to break Eugenio’s MLB-record futility streak.

To nitpick, Eugenio’s record is a record only for non-pitchers. I’m sure more than a few pitchers have gone 0 for 47.

I realize the Giants got him for the minimum but I don’t understand why they’re wasting their time. Some kid could have gotten those 38 at bats and learned a thing or two about facing MLB pitching. Pablo is done, unless he goes on “The Biggest Loser” and wins the show.

For those who never watch the west, the Diamondbacks have won 13 in a row (a franchise record), sweeping their last three series, including the most recent against the Hated Dodgers in LA. (dit dit dit DAH).

You are correct. Jon Lester appears to hold that record. It took him 67 at-bats to record his first career hit. Before him, Padres’ pitcher Joey Hamilton held the record at 57. But both of those are records to START a career. It wasn’t immediately clear to me if those were also records during any point of someone’s career.

Actually they are not. Sorry to crush your dreams.

A bit of helpful, hopeful history for my downtrodden Dodger brethren.

Meanwhile, my Indian brethren are getting all the help they need, with the Tribe looking to be comfortably on their way to a 15th straight win tonight. Methinks they want another shot at the Fall Classic.

Oh well…it’s an odd year anyway.

Nats’ Michael A. Taylor hits an inside-the-park, grand slam against the Phillies.

Cubs have their first ever night game at Wrigley. They’re pushing for more night games and they were able to get an exception since they had a 4 game series in Pittsburgh with a night game last night, they also haven’t had a day off in quite a while. They were able to get the exception to avoid the afternoon game after the night game last night. Of course, this part of the push for more night games for next year as they can show that the world didn’t come to an end. It’s a pretty smart move, it’s a Friday after Labor Day so there isn’t as much traffic as you might get during the summer.

??? They’ve had night games for years at Wrigley’s, including the World Series last year. So this is the first ever September? Friday? night game?

Don’t look now, but the Dodgers actually came out of the 1st inning with a LEAD! Any chance we can make this official and just call the game now?

Apparently not. Rockies just took the lead.

Bob Buhl holds the record for consecutive hitless at bats. He struck out in his only at bat with Milwaukee to begin the 1962 season. Dealt to the Cubs, he was hitless in all 69 at bats for a season total of 70 hitless at bats. From the tail end of 1961 and beginning of 1963, Buhl was hitless in 87 consecutive at bats.

389 strikeouts in 857 at-bats. Ouch, poor guy. He was a decent pitcher, though.

Nats clinch!

Oops, yes, their first ever Friday night game.

Yanks are getting a little safety in the Wild Card and still possible to take the division but not looking too likely. It looks like Judge did indeed wake back up. Hopefully he and Sanchez can power the team along.

In the interest of retaining what little optimism I have left, it would be awfully fun to have the Dodgers right their ship against the Giants. I’m hoping I still have a reason to look forward to them coming to DC this weekend.

The NL wildcard is starting to become intriguing, as is the NL Central race. Though I am not at all happy about the Cardinals having worked themselves back into the playoff conversation.

Whatever the Dodgers did to anger the baseball gods on August 19th, I hope they can make amends on this road trip.

We are now the only team ever in baseball to both win 15 of 16 and lose 15 of 16 in the same season. That’s a record I could have done without, thank you very much.
