It looks like I’m going to go to the Yankees at Tampa game in Citifield Wednesday. Should be an interesting trip. I imagine the crowd will be fairly decent in size.
They are certainly headed to the right places to get back on track. Of course, if they can’t make headway against the Giants and Phillies, it might be time to call it a season.
Back on August 25th the Dodgers had a 21 game lead in the NL West. At the time I speculated that they had a chance to break the all-time wins record with 117.
That lead is down to 9 but they only have 19 games left to play. It’s impossible probably, but wouldn’t it be cool if they spiralled down so bad that they lost the division? That would be some kind of record, way worse than the 2011 Red Sox.
To lose 15 out of 16 may be regarded as a misfortune. To lose 34 out of 35 seems like carelessness.
My phone tells me that the Giants-Dodgers game is being delayed. I consider this some kind of omen. What’s the old song? It never rains in Northern California? I’m pretty sure that’s close, anyway.
Clearly, a sign that the Dodgers’ fortunes are changing.
Well, the start of the game was delayed by 40 minutes or so, then they got through one batter, and now they’ve halted play.
Maybe if the national anthem hadn’t lasted about 15 minutes (it is 9/11, after all)…
Anyone else rooting for the Indians to set the winning streak record? It can’t just be me.
I don’t remember so many teams being on wild streaks at the same time.
So Aaron Judge is now the record holder for most Home Runs by a rookie. I’m glad that is out of the way, I hope he adds a lot more over the next 3 weeks. I especially hope he hits one tomorrow when I’m at the game.
Still have the best record in the majors at least. Though now Cleveland actually closing in.
The rookie home run record is 49 held by Mark McGwire. Judge set the rookie walks record the other day.
:smack:, argh. Thank you
Definitely me. Not a Cleveland fan especially, and I don’t follow the AL all that closely, but it’s fun to see a team play so well for so long. Joe Posnanski had an article about how they are even more dominant than the other teams with similar streaks.
As to your second point–somebody pointed out this morning that if the Dodgers and Cleveland played in the same division, the Indians would’ve gained fifteen and a half games on LA in the last seventeen days. There’s a mind-blowing statistic.
We’ll forgive you - it’s your birthday, after all. Have a great one!
So, it’s really weird being an Dodgers and Indians fan right now. On the one hand, I keep thinking that based on talent level, this horrible streak HAS to come to an end at some point. And on the other hand, I think that based on talent level, this wonderful streak NEVER has to end, right?
I am a terrible person, but at this point, I would be willing to sacrifice an Indians victory for a Dodger victory. There, I said it.
I’ll just be over in the corner, trembling, until this all sorts itself out.
Sox fan. Yes, I hope they win 30 in a row. And then go ice cold to level things out like the Dodgers are doing.
What does everyone think about the sudden death wild card? I think I’d rather see a best of three…I like the symmetry of 3-5-7 through the rounds…but the season would have to start sooner or some other solution. I don’t want to see baseball in the snow.
Hate the sudden death wild card but the season already stretches too far into the year. Win your division

I’m on the other side of it. I like it. Keeps more fans engaged in the season longer, but the one-and-done is so scary that no team is going to be content just being a wild card team. I think it’s a plus for baseball.
Add two teams and you could have four four-team divisions, with no wild card at all. I’m not sure if that would be better. As it is, September is exciting right now for at least a third of all teams. Wild cards or four divisions?
The Dodgers are a mess right now and I’m not sure they’ll recover. At the end of August, I just thought that all they needed to do was go .500 in August and play competitively against their division rivals. They’ve not won a game and they’ve been murdered by division opponents. The pitching was bad enough but they’re not hitting too well either as of late, and while I could see guys like Kershaw and Darvish stepping up for the occasion, it might be harder for the lineup to flip the switch.
The Indians are obviously playing the best baseball of any team, and I don’t think it’s a case of peaking too early. These are the same Indians that were a go-ahead RBI from winning the WS last year, but possibly even better. I think the Astros and Red Sox will be competitive. Maybe the Yankees too.
The NL, though, is just wide open.
