That is baseball. The old adages have value over time but mean nothing the next game. But the huge volume of information over 200,000 baseball games makes people believe they can predict. Beltrade has hit 3 home runs today. There is no way that could have been predicted.
I can dig up stats that will prove the Tigers have a better hitting team that the Yankees. I can also find stats that say the Yankees are a better hitting team. All that matters is how they hit today.
I kid with people who honestly believe they have broken the code.
Porcello is pitching today. His sinker ball causes lots of ground balls. I have seen him get creamed on ground balls through the infield. When they are able to be caught, he has a better end. But shit happens.
But he has lots of rest. That generally causes him to come up with his pitches. That can be dangerous.
Sports involves a lot of luck too. Line drives that hit the chalk line instead of just missing can change everything. Bad ump calls can kill you.
Rangers advance . Tampa Bay is done. A 4 to 3 slug fest. Yet there were 4 home runs in the game.
I sure didn’t expect “Beltrade” to hit three home runs today.
Who have you ever met who actually belives they can accurately predict the result of a baseball game?

No formal warning, but let’s watch it and keep the discussion to baseball.

Its over the top to suggest they can even predict a series. The first ones are 5 games. They are less predictable. The world series is better but that is still too small a sample to decide the best team. A few years ago ,who would have predicted the Tigers would lose the series because their pitchers could not throw the ball to first base?
A season is a far better sample, but how often are the c=baseball geniuses wrong about them? Even with all the data available in baseball, you still can not predict the game very well.
I just like to take little jabs at people who feel confident in predicting. Also the ones who assume they can decide which team is better.
Oh yeh, people who are dumb enough to claim the Yankees are a way better hitting team than the Tigers.
Granderson caught a ball going deep that would have scored 2 for Detroit in the first. Then Jackson gets one a bit over his glove. two for the Yankees. It is a game of inches and breaks.
Granderson made it harder then it was though by coming in first. ’
Victor just got one back, damn.
I don’t think you even understand what people are saying when they make predictions. No one, not even stat-enthusiasts, believe that baseball is a deterministic game, decided before they get on the field. But then, you’re a stat head the same as anyone else - why else would you keep track of batting average or ERA? As a way to determine which players, and thus which group of players are better. These were not stats handed down from on high by the baseball gods - someone sat down and manufactured them (batting average in particular is one of the most convoluted stats you could come up with in terms of what counts as a hit or and out, and what counts as an at bat or not. No one would invent it today).
Over a course of a series of games, generally the best players will win more. Over short series, that gets more random, obviously, and no one disputes that. When someone says the Yankees hitters are better than the Tigers (or vice versa, or any other comparison you might want to make), they are not making a statement that nothing could go against their prediction (the only person I’ve seen make those type of statements are you). They’re making an assessment of skill based on their best analysis, and if you’re honest with yourself, you see that every single person who watches sports does this. No one watches sports and says “I dunno. Anything could happen and I have no prediction as to who will win this game”.
Time for A-Rod to get off the snide here. Bases loaded and 1 out. Cano Intentionally walked in front of him.
Well at least he got a RBI. 4-1 Yanks now.
Of course I understand. Is there some kind of esoteric understanding that I cannot follow? That is the reason bookies do so well.
If you did understand, you wouldn’t say things like, well, just about anything you’ve said in this thread.
Holyshit what a catch by Granderson. That was awesome.
I think he launched his arm out of his body to catch that.
Good job Soriano, 6 outs to go for the trip back to the Bronx.
This is threatening to turn into a Bugs Bunny style Conga Line.
You tell 'em, Bugs.
Wow that Yankees offense is sure overrated.
Zona’ is up 7-1 in the other ongoing game. Also trying to stave off elimination.
Thinking about the Yankee season coming down to the least popular Yankee (among Yankee fans at least) I kept thinking about The Redemption Song for AJ should be his theme going into the game.
On the plus side I get to see the Yankees play at least one more game. On the down side I’ll miss both Community and Big Bang Theory.
It’s some what ironic that before the series started I thought the Yankees would win in 4 or lose in 5. Going into tonight I thought they would lose in 4 or win in 5. Should be an entertaining game 5.
I picked a good time to travel to NYC. That was a fun game to watch in bar last night. Now I have to call in every favor to try for tix for Thursday.
