I can’t believe I missed it. I go to Wisconsin to fish for the weekend & am told that some maniac kicked a catcher in the face & then knocked out the pitcher in a Major League game. I have been stuck for days without my computer to aid my quest for the goods. Help!!!
Did you see this? Was he a martial arts guy or just a lucky shot? Was he hit by the pitcher? Was it intentional? How long is he out for/how mu was he fined?$$$
and finally, but most inportantly, where can I see the video??? (I would prefer somewhere that I could download it & then forward it in e-mail, but have had no luck even viewing it).
JC - I saw this on CNN not too long ago. It was a minor league game as was said, but what you don’t see in the video was the pitcher brushed the batter off the plate two pitches in a row. The batter then snapped and kicked the catcher before charging the mound. He was then going after any member of the opposite team he could find. I don’t think it had anything to do with martial arts.
For the record, the batter in question was Izzy Alcantra, a pitcher. Why he didn’t wait until he was on the mound to throw at someone else is beyond me.
Izzy is not a pitcher, he’s an all-star outfielder for his International League team (he’s in the Red Sox farm system).
Not only did they throw at him in the preceding pitches, but that team has a history of throwing at Izzy this year, since he has had a lot of success off them.(3 HRs, I think. On the last one that he hit, the other team thought he was running around the bases too slowly, and this is how they were telling his this)
There has been some serious bad vibes brewing between the Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston’s farm team) and Scranton over the past few weeks. The close pitch was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Pretty good mule kick, though, I must say.
Alcantra didn’t knock out the pitcher, he didn’t even land any good shots on anyone (except if you consider the kick to the face mask a good shot). He charged the mound, and the pitcher backed/ran away and threw his glove at Alcantra. Then the rest of the players arrived on the scene and it was your usual baseball fight with nothing really going down. Alcantra was wrestled to the ground before he could really mix it up with anyone. By the way, the catcher wasn’t hurt by the kick, and he ran out to the mound melee right away.
Alcantra was suspended only 6 games, which kind of surprised me. He was in line for a possible call-up to the majors in the near future, and that may be on hold for a little longer, but this will only be a minor setback at most for his career.
No, no, that’s not how I heard it. I heard that the pitcher looked at him wrong when he was digging in so the batter pulled a gun (ala “Last Boy Scout”) and started shooting everyone on the field. They’re still looking for the guy too.
I laughed when I saw what you wrote. I knew from the title what you’d be asking about, but it was funny to see the exageration of the story from whomever told you. As already noted, the batter’s fist did not make contact with anyone. I really liked the kick to the face of the catcher before charging, he get’s a 10 for originality.
Just to try to make this post at least somewhat useful, Julian Tavarez tried to drop kick Russ Davis during a exhibition game in spring training.
Hmmmm . . . I don’t think that made it any more useful. Sorry.
A few years ago, Dave Stewart of the A’s and Pat Corrales of the Indians got into a kickfight in a major league game. Both are students of the martial arts.
A few years before that, George Bell of the Blue Jays drop-kicked Bruce Kison of the Red Sox after a beanball incident.
