MMP: On the improbability of David Cross simultaneity

I was driving from Philadelphia to New York today. En route, I stopped at a used DVD shop in New Jersey. I mostly bought DVD’s but I also happened to walk past the comedy CD section and decided to check what they had. I saw a used copy of a David Cross CD and decided to buy it.

I continued to drive for a couple of hours, listening to my usual books on tape. But when I stopped for lunch, I decided to switch CD’s. I considered several different CD’s I had bought over the weekend and decided to listen to the David Cross CD.

Now comedy CD’s don’t have anywhere near the popularity that music CD’s have. And David Cross, while funny, is not particularly popular for his stand-up material - most people that know him are more familiar with his work in movies or on TV. And this particular CD, Shut Up, You Fucking Baby!, was released in 2002, so it’s not anything recent. So if I had been asked to estimate the odds, I’d have said there was a good chance that I was the only person on Earth that happened to be listening to this CD today.

Except that about an hour later as I was listening to the second disc, I drove by another video store and decided to check to see if they had any DVD’s for sale. And as I walked in the door, not only were they playing Shut Up, You Fucking Baby! but they even had the same track on. I was literally stunned - the two guys in the store asked me what was wrong as I froze in the doorway. For an instant I thought that somehow they had some gadget in the store that was picking up broadcasts from car stereos in the parking lot before asking if they were in fact playing a David Cross CD on the store’s stereo system, which they said they were.

It would not be unlikely that I was listening to the CD at the same time. I listen to/quote that CD almost regularly. I think David Cross is about the funniest comedian out there today.

I was walking down Broadway in NYC a few years ago. For some reason, I had the theme song to The Great Escape running in my head.

Saw a used bookstore and went in. Guess what song was playing on their music system? And could you find a more obscure song for a bookstore to be playing, and me to be thinking of at the same time?

It was so unbelievably random. I bought the CD they were playing right out of the machine.

You don’t happen to work in a video store in Nyack do you?
