what have you got against veggies? It’s not like they’re an endangered species or anything. And they do [AltonBrown]bring a lot of flavor to the party[/AB]
We’ve been told to expect 2" or so of the white stuff, but our forecasts tend to be completely wrong and the weather likes to dance around here. It either completely misses us (pretty often) or decides that we actually wanted lots more snow than forecast. We’ll see what actually happens.
Thanks for the tip on the tortilla recipe Lissla. I found the one you used, I think. I also found some other recipes with odd combinations of oil and water and flour. I’m going to make some this weekend. Mmmmm. Scrambled eggs with potatoes and bacon and onion and then a flour tortilla… And a little bit of salsa. And some avocado. Mmmmmm. Might be breakfast tomorrow.
Happy anniversaries and birthdays and everything.
Oh and Spats, I know you’ve heard this already, but 7:00 workout sounds like your best bet.
I’m sitting here watching part of the Olympic opening ceremonies. They just started - FINALLY - to show the actual ceremonies after a lot of bla bla bla (I wasn’t actually paying attention). This part is kind of cool. Lots of fire and ice.
Dinner has been eclectic. Haven’t really felt like much so I had a few potato chips. A rice cake. Some flan (Kozy Shack makes flan and it’s actually pretty good). I think I’m going to make some tea.
OK…I’d just like to go on record as saying that the alpine part of the ceremony is…odd. In kind of a good way (skaters in costumes that make them look like spotted cows - almost like a Gateway ad; plastic cows on ice; mooing; tree people; people with big old Alpenhorns).
Hi Smitty, welcome! I think the coolness hits once you’ve posted a few times. Also, hi there, GC Chemist (posted in the ATMB thread and apparently lurks a lot cuz he (she?) certainly described us accurately). Come join us!
Contemplating what to do with my weekend. I’d really like to get my taxes done, but I have quite a bit of prep work to do…
GT
Just saw The Stepford Wives with a friend- the new one. It was kind of funny, although it had a crummy ending. I should laze around until Mr. Lissar gets home.
What? No one else is up yet? That seems unlikely. Probably everyone is having just as fascinating a day as I. Made tortillas and eggs - yum. Need to work on the tortilla technique, but definitely better than my last attempt. Is it possible to freeze this dough? Scientific experiment to follow.
Surfed the Dope; admired peoples websites and read about people’s children. Wrote a note in the tortilla recipe which I have now saved to my epicurious recipe box. Who knew I had 62 recipes in there?
I think the Lime Cilantro Sweet Potatoes sound yummy; might have them later today - I have all the ingredients.
Off to make family Valentines (is it bad that I sent SDMB Valentines days ago but haven’t even made the family ones? I considered buying some last night, looked at prices and decided against it).

Good morning everybody! Did those of you that were forecasted to receive snow actually get any? It’s cold and frosty here. I woke up at 5:00 a.m and made a fire. Yep, that was real hard work making that fire. It took a lot of work to flip that switch on my wall.
We ended up going out for Chinese food last night. It was good. My daughter accidently cleared her sinuses out a few times last night because she had too much hot mustard on her BBQ pork. Her eyes were watering. She didn’t give up on it though, she went back for more.
I don’t have any real exciting plans for the weekend. Just hanging out I guess.
Mr. Taters’ shoulder is all messed up. He can’t lift his arm very far. He doesn’t know what he did. He took some Motrin yesterday, but his shoulder still isn’t any better. Hopefully, it’ll be better by the time the weekend is over.
Well, where’s that recipe **Swampy? **
Good morning all! It’s rainy and yucky in south Jawja. ACBG made me breakfast. Ain’t he a sweetie! In a bit we’re venturing out to go look at sofas for him and to go to Sam’s Club to get stuff. I need stuff and Sam’s is just full of stuff!
Ok, here it is. A very simple and very good buttermilk biscuit recipe.
Buttermilk Biscuits
3 cups self-rising flour (sifted)
1 cup shortening
2 cups buttermilk
Cut shortening into flour until it resembles coarse crumbs. Mix in milk. Add a little more flour if necessary. HINT: Have another cup of sifted flour on hand in case you need to add a little more. Knead dough very gently, no more than 10 to 12 times. That is very important. Roll out dough, cut and bake in a 450 degree oven until biscuits are lightly brown. This should usually be anywhere from 10 to 12 minutes. Oh, and you can just pinch bits of dough off and roll it into a biscuit shape. That’s what I usually do.
As y’all can see, there’s some play in this recipe. Thus, it make take a few times before you get those perfect light fluffy biscuits. Or, you may be real good and get it the first time.
No snow here yet. Map doesn’t look super-threatening.
Now I want to make biscuits.
GT
Thanks Swampy!
I wish someone would make me breakfast. That would be nice. Actually, the kids make me breakfast in bed on Mother’s Day. They also make it for me if my birthday falls on a weekend. They’re so cool.
Still nothing exciting to report. I’ve just been cruising the web and the SDMB.
Mmm. Breakfast would be nice. Still waiting for kettle to boil, so not fully coherent.
Because of the thread about fities housewifes, I have my persnal copy of The Total Woman beside the keyboard. How frightening. “Bobbie,” I told her, “adapt to his way of life wholeheartedly, even if he doesn’t come home for weeks. When he is home, make life so attractive he won’t want to leave. Don’t make him feel guilty and don’t complain… treat him like a king”.
retching noises
Mmm, biscuits! We’re having some with tomorrows breakfast, but they are the frozen ones. Too much to do to take a couple extra minutes to mix some up. The cake is coming along well so far, I have it sitting out in the back porch to cool. The whole house smells yummy. Now I just need to get the ganache together for the icing.
gt, those sweet taters do sound yummy.
Whew - busy day here so far. I’ve just been on line a little bit. We went to breakfast, then went to check on the boat. It’s floating, so that’s good. We saw a few spits of rain on our windshield as we came home. So we pulled the van out of the garage and carried the couch out the front door and into the garage to wrap it up for the trip south next week. It was easier than trying to take it out the kitchen door to the garage. We also took out the recliner and wrapped it, and brought the rug from the attic. All those things are staged in the garage for when my mom gets here with the truck on Thurs.
Then I got out the vacuum cleaner and ran thru the family room, living room, dining room, hall, and bedroom. I moved the remaining couch to the opposite wall, and put the cat’s tower back in front of the window. The living room looks huge now! I’m going to reupholster the love seat, since pink doesn’t look very good in a pumpkin colored room.
It’s drizzling now, and “they” say it’s going to really start snowing this evening into tomorrow. I’ll believe it when I see it. For now, we’re being bums.
FCM, if that’s being bums, then I’m somewhere beyond bum-ness.
I went out to the Meijer’s (kind of like a regional WalMart; they’re a Michigan-based chain) that’s actually closest to me, but that I’d never been to because I am a creature of habit. I went out there because gas on that side of town is really cheap and gas around here had gone down to $2.10, but I knew it would be at least a dime cheaper there. $1.98. Figured I’d do my basic grocery shopping there (cuz I wasn’t about to go out there just for gas). Wondered if they’d have acceptable corn tortillas (Meijer’s tends to have pretty OK ethnic stuff). Had about 3 items on my grocery list. Came back with 10 not-very full bags. Mostly pantry items. They have that nice low-sodium Swanson’s chicken broth in large cartons (Giant Eagle only carries the cans). Bought 6. They had White Lily self-rising flour. Bought it for biscuits. Bought regular white flour because I’m almost out. And whole wheat. Ditto. Bunch of tomato products. Chocolate for work. Mexican cheese (Chihuaha). They didn’t have the kind of tortillas I wanted, though.
I’ve put the refrigerated stuff away and am going out to run the rest of my errands…
Still not even a hint of precipitation. The sun was almost shining about 1/2 an hour ago.
GT
The sun is shining here too, but it’s cold. Temps are supposed to drop into the high twenties tonight. Yes, it’s not Alaska or Canada cold, but that’s still cold.
Hubby is running to the dump. I’m puttering around, but not getting much done. I’ll have to head to the store sometime because the dog is low on dog food, and someone drank all my diet coke. I bought some of that black cherry vanilla stuff; I don’t really like it. Unfortunately, that’s all that’s left in the house.
Really, I’m very tempted to lie down and take a nap. My eyes feel kind of heavy.
Naps are good. Go ahead.
I just at a bowl of sliced strawberries and homemade custard and lime curd. Envy me. It was very, very yummy. Now it is time to go in and pretend to work for six hours.
The drizzle has turned to rain has turned to snow. According to “them”, it’ll be really bad overnight as far as accumulation. But that’s OK - I think we’re in for the duration.
We tidied the basement and fixed the sewing machine - except it needs a new O-ring thingy for the bobbin filler. This is an old machine - only straight stitches, although there is a length adjustment, and it does reverse. I had to figure out how to thread it, but I sewed a bit on it and it works and that’s all that matters.
Tomorrow we’ll build the box she requested to disguise her cat box. We’re covering it with lime green “mink” - it’ll be stunning! I think the kid will like it. Dunno about the cat.
Oh, I also washed a load of towels. But I’m done for the day. Maybe I’ll make a fire. Maybe not. We shall see…
Back from errands. Started to look at Windows laptops because my PC is starting to die and I’m afraid I’ll have to replace it to get my taxes done (it’s been really good - going on 8 years, no trouble). Stopped at Trader Joe’s, stopped at a Mexican store for tortillas, sweet potatoes are now in the oven.
Need to go get buttermilk; it’s the only item on my list that I completely forgot. (And it’s essential for those nice biscuits.
Still no sign of snow although the weather people still insist there’s a 50% chance of the stuff. I guess I’m in the 50% that’s snow-free. For now, at any rate.
Off to do more stuff…
GT
Well, the ground is white - at least the grassy part is. I’m guessing maybe 1/2" so far, and it’s coming down pretty good now. We’re about on the border between 6-10" and 3-6", so we may get lucky. But even if it’s just 3", we’ll have to shovel tomorrow. woo hoo.
We’ve got a fire going - I started a good one. And the ceiling fan is moving the warm air around, so that’s nice. Cozy. Too bad about the snow.
Snow started in earnest about 3 hours ago - light but steady - already 2 inches, if the pile on my car is to be believed - I ended up not going to the dinner - the organizer said she was going to call it off. The worst of it will be between midnight and 8am - finally stopping tomorrow late afternoon, early evening. I hope my landscaper (who also clears snow) got my 3 messages. If he doesn’t dig me out, I won’t be able to go to W Monday. Which would be ok - but I left a report running and I wanted to finish it…
::reads this as “Personally donkeybear of chaos is the coolest person ever”::
Just a dusting of snow here.
Ok-we’re not supposed to get socked in or anything. I just felt left out with all this white stuff swirling around.
Off to work.
