It certainly explains for me your side of things, Shayna. I can’t blame you for getting fed up with abuse and though surely you expect such to a certain extent in the pit, there certainly is a limit.
I just have a vision in my mind of a future in which every poster has to keep a list by his or her computer of all the posters they are not allowed to address, on pain of being reported for harassment. I can see oldscratch, for example, thinking “Hmm. I really want to refute Nacho4Sara’s points in this measured political debate, but I can’t since that would result in my ISP suspending my services.” Meanwhile N4S didn’t really get across the full thrust of her argument anyway since she couldn’t fully respond to Upham’s points for the same reason. Upham himself on the other hand wasn’t allowed to respond to any of the previous posts, so his argument was a bit incongruous and bitty, attempting to address some points whilst carefully skating the fine line of not actually mentioning the specific points he is addressing.
Your disagreement with cartooniverse, as I acknowledged, isn’t my business. A board that goes in the above direction however would be, and would be more than a little unfortunate. Like I said, I can’t blame you for taking the action you pursued. I will ask though if, in retrospect, it was really necessary? (Invoke slippery slope argument here).

Finally, to clarify - I never thought that anyone had actually threatened to sue anyone. My last remark was just meant to be a little lighthearted, hence the big grin that went with it. Furthermore I personally never thought that the board should take any action against you orcartooniverse. It was merely the fact that Euty seemed to be threatening cartooniverse with banning that prompted the question.
I asked for things to be kept civil in this thread. I know its the pit, but the point of this thread is to keep things nice and easy, in a pit like setting, if you can understand.

How was i not allowed to post? I post where and when i fuckin well feel like it, provided i have something to say. I wasn’t even paying attention to this thread till i did a little Ego search for my name and this thread came up. That just happens to be all i have to say. Do you honestly think i’m scared of what somepeople will say to me or what i might say to other posters?

But hey Alpha, I didn’t state that I had intentions of helping someone to pass their eye test. I think you’ll see that I refered to the situation in hypotheic terms. Yes, I do know someone that has a vision problem and was going to take the test, but hey, by the time the thread got underway he had already taken the test. I learned this evening that he passed the exam although he couldn’t read even the biggest symbol with the left eye. He told me that they graded him 20/300 in his bad eye and 20/30 in his good one. I wasn’t going to try to procure a copy of the chart, and the person in question (believe me) wouldn’t have wanted to try to memorize it anyway.

He can answer if he wants to, or ignore me if he’d prefer…I’ll accept any level of particpation or non-participation that he gives me. I would be interested in reading the opinions of other members…although a certain percentage of them are known moderator butt-kissers, there are actually many that will still give you an honest opinion…which is why I keep coming back.
I’ll take a stab at it. If indeed the link was to specific instructions on how to make LSD from plants, I agree. If he makes it a policy to delete any link to the erowid site, I’d have to disagree. Also, if it was linked to information on the site that simply showed how you couldn’t create controlled substances from Morning Glory seeds, I’d have to also disagree.

In both of these cases the Moderator’s actions are in line with their past actions. The administration has consistently closed threads and deleted links that were references to illegal activity. They do this consistently. Regardless of who the poster might be.
In your thread you would have been on more solid ground had you left it in the world of the hypothetical, instead of bringing up the real person who had an upcoming eye test.
Of course, I didn’t see the link that was deleted, so I can’t really comment on that. But, as I have said before manhattan is a good egg. I have no doubt that the link was borderline, at best.

I don’t venture into the pit very often. And when I do, I seldom feel that there is any point in posting, since it is my considered opinion that most of the time it is useless. It is useless because usually, no one involved REALLY wants to resolve anything, most times they just want to be contentious.
People need to vent, and this is a forum for them to do so. I have no problem with this. Although, I have to say that I think it would be best, and nice, if people really WERE trying to resolve things.
But I would like to say that this is the best message board on the net. Largely, I believe, because of the moderators. We are lucky enough to have intelligent, caring and witty moderators here. They donate their time to make this board a reasonible place to be.
I am getting tired of the petty stuff that gets elevated to Olympian heights by people who should know better. Our moderators are trying to make this place a CIVIL place for people to express differing opinions, and at the same time they are trying to keep the peace.
I commend their efforts, and (I know that this is going to be flamed, and I don’t care much) I wish that we could just all make an effort to agree to disagree here and there without it escalating into a war. It CAN be done, if we make an effort.

The fact that moderators are all human beings means that mistakes are sometimes made. I remember manhattan, in true style, admitting to a mistake just a few weeks ago. What happened with the Melin incident was something else altogether. You can look it all up if you want - although looking things up apparently isn’t your forte. Bottom line: I reviewed the thread, and wholeheartedly agreed with Chronos’ actions. Any conspiracy theories you further choose to attach to that are your business. Perhaps some people will be slightly amused. Who knows.
Let’s assume for arguments sake that this is true (I fuckin’ doubt it). Chronos had no way of knowing that. He saw you ask if it’s possible to memorize an eye exam, and he saw you say it was for a friend of yours that needed to pass such an exam for his drivers license. He closed it because that was all the info he had. And no matter what claims you make now can put Chronos’ decision in a different light. So you might as well stop it.
Krispy, you brought this complaint up. If it were up to me, I wouldn’t be spending any time at all on you. It’s just my job (as well as all of the other mods) to respond to questions about moderator actions. Well, it’s not a duty, since this isn’t a democracy, it’s a courtesy.
