Moderator Powers

Seeing as the question is not related to the topic at hand, I thought this was the best place to ask the question. Anyway, I was under the impression Mods only had “actual” power (that is, editing/deleting etc) in the forums they “moderate” according to the forum listing page. This would be confirmed by my experiences on other Vbulletin boards. So what is the, uhh, [urk] Straight Dope [/urk], on this topic?

Oh, dammit, my big moment and I screw up the url tag… fixing would be appreciated

I sort of answered the question with that correction, didn’t I?

First, here’s how to code your link:
[b**]To whom do I report [/url][/b]
This becomes:
**[url=“http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=47913”]To whom do I report
**

Here’s some answers to the question:
All the mods have permissions on all the forums, but they tend to keep to their own patch unless they know someone else is unavailable. The Adminstrators, of course, cover the entire board.

A question about links to commercial sites

What’s the difference between Admins and Mods?

Though we could play moderator in any of the forums, we generally stick to our own unless we are asked to help.
I was just giving an example to show that we can cross over if necessary.

I’d liken it to State Troopers vs. city Police.

The State Troopers (admins) roam freely acrost the boards, doing what and whatever they wish.

The city Police, on the other hand, stay mainly within their confines, eating donuts and whatnot.

While the city Police technically have power across the entire state and are within jurisdiction everywhere, they have their assigned area to patrol which they stick to (due to respect for the other officers, and abject terror of the unknown [the unknown being forums 9, 10, 11]) unless extenuating circumstances call them from their bounds.

Administrators, Lynn and Tuba, have been here forever. They are somewhat hermited from age and are rarely seen except in dire circumstances.

Mod Mark II, Such as manny or slythe, are somewhat more active and prominent (only in amount of action, certainly not quality) yet stick mainly to their own fora due to routine and complacence.

Mod Mark III, aka recent additions, such as Veb and Coldy, have been and extremely active for a year or so. They frequent all the forums and are on here constantly (nearly to a fault!) and therefore, may be quicker on the draw to fix a tag error, or boot a thread to it’s proper place or whatever, simply because they are likely to make it there first. (Also, these power hungry bastards are out to make a quick name for their self. Coldfire is aiming for “Quickest Temper in the Northwest” so watch out! He’s got a sharp aim!)

On top of that, the sheer number of persons helping with this board these days make it much more likely that a person who is a mod for another forum will happen across a problem before the mod for that forum.

In the time of JillGat, Nickrz, CKDexthavn, TubaDiva, David B, and Lynn Bodoni, there was a mere 6 moderators for 7 forums (TubaDiva did both ATMB and CCC, IIRC). Now that we have 8 forums and 15 mods, we’ve added but a single forum but doubled and half again the number of mods. Sheer probability, chap.

Before anyone gets their nickrz in a bunch over the previous comments, keep in mind that my tongue is firmly in between my upper and lower mandibles. Or something such as that. Perhaps creating a raspberry, or inside my cheek.

JillGat did Comments on Cecil’s Columns-- The missing one in your list is MPSIMS, and I think that Euty might have been one of the Original Mods. Also, ColdieClogs is from and in the Netherlands, which is seldom referred to as the Northwest by anyone. Perhaps you were referring to me, in Montana?

BTW, good analogy about the police.

Aah, thanks all. This is very interesting, as a vbulletin board I frequent only lets the moderators moderate their patch o’ the woods.

And I did know how to make the url, but it didn’t work… it was fine when I hit submit, I swear!

Well, not on your continent, anyway

Since few of us are on the boards 24/7, we generally hope and expect that other moderators will help out with any major problems. “Turf” issues don’t arise.

And what I get no mention whatsoever? Freakin’ Nickrz gets a shout out and I don’t?

In case you’re wondering, I’m a Mark 1000, a futuristic prototype moderator capable of moving from fourm to fourm in liquid form and impaling people to walls in an attempt to get them to “Call for John”.

…Yes, I watched Terminator 2 yesterday.

Ack! How did I forget Euty!? Sheesh!

Chronos: Yeah, I was referring to NW Europe.

Sorry, Alphagene, I had comments written for all mods, but I thought it was getting too lengthy so I trimmed it. I also smoothed it out some. I was originally quite a bit more sarcastic and acidic and wasn’t sure if everyone would realize I was joshin’.
