Moderators' hats

In many threads I see posts from the mods that go something like this:

[Moderator Hat: ON]

blah, blah, blah

[Moderator Hat: OFF]

What I want to know is, what do these moderators’ hats look like? Does each mod have a different hat of their choosing, or are they issued by Ed like a uniform? What hats would each mod pick if they had a choice? I am imagining a pirate’s hat, emblazoned with a skull and crossbones sitting beside the mods’ computers…

This is in the pit, not because I expect it to get nasty, but because the pit is for “other discussion regarding administration of the SDMB” (I assume this includes silliness  )

Nah. They’re pink ballcaps, with a little emoticon on the front showing a smiley face wearing a judge’s white wig. That’s why the Mods wear their hats only when absolutely necessary.

If they were pirate hats, they’d be wearing them all the time! I mean, wouldn’t you?

Chronos had a Moderator Watch when he was on staff.

Here’s an earlier take on the subject: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=76885&highlight=moderator+hats.

well, Coldy has moderator clogs, UncleBeer has a moderator beerhat, and Ukelele Ike has a rather splendid moderator Brown Derby.

. . . except sometimes Coldfire’s had a few, and ends up with his pink hat on his foot, and a clog on his head.

Noodles, of course, has a natty Tyrolean hat, with a Birkut feather in the band.

David B, who started it IIRC, uses an invisible yarmulkeh, for atheists of Jewish descent.

Uncle Beer has a porkpie hat of dubious provenance.

Ed Zotti is reputed to have a Mod. Hat with a photograph of Cecil silkscreened onto the fabric, but he never lets anyone else see it.

TVeblen has an attractive little basic black cloche – a gift from Eve as I understand.

Ukulele Ike uses a scruffy old derby with a “Press” card in the band, which it is rumored he lifted from a Damon Runyon character.

xash, of course, has a turban – rumored to generate 1.5 megawatts when in full operation.

John Corrado has a ski toque, for keeping his head warm.

TubaDiva has a bandleader’s hat of the sort appropriate in a marching band.

Dr Matrix’s hat has never been described – it’s reputed to bring instant death to those who see it.

Gaudere has a magical hat whereupon anyone whosoever looks upon it and scoffs suddenly finds problems with their own attire.

I thought each forum had a special hat as part of their uniform, so you could tell them apart. You know, like nurses in different departments of the hospital wear different colors of scrubs.

Damn, when I’m wrong, I’m really wrong.

I’m wearing one right now  It matches the parrot. That’s why it sprung to mind when I saw all this talk about moderator’s hats.

Screw the hats, Czarcasm’s got Underoos! In my mind they’re bright blue with a gold racing stripe

I wish I could be a Moderator, just so I could wear a Moderator’s Hat. I’d have a pointy cap made of red felt, with the word “MODDERATER” spelled out in dull sequins.

With, on really busy days, the inclusion of a brown skid mark.

Who’s Noodles?

Winkelried.

Gee I thought the hats they wore were all the same…little beanies with propellers

That’s how I’ve always pictured them in my head anyway

Now I’m depressed

Go ahead and tell the whole story and which head.

I’ve seen Gaudere’s moderator hat. It’s a court jester’s hat. And it suits her wonderfully.

No, Arnold’s is a shiny metallic gold color.

And Czarcasm’s underpants are actually a brown loincloth.

I have long been preoccupied by the appearance of Moderator Hats. At first I thought of them as baseball caps in various colors to designate function like staff personnel in Vietnam where the officers and enlisted people in the Judge Advocate’s Office of the First Cav. Division wore black hats with the letters F.T.A. (for First Team Advocate, of course).

On further consideration it seems to me that for formal and dress occasions the Moderators and the Administrators must wear a black leather and brass affair like the Piklehalbs worn by German Generals of the Second Empire (1870-1918). The model authorized for Administrators, I think, must have a plume of dark horse tail rising from the spike and cascading grandly over the left ear.

The Great Cecil of course wears a pope like miter hat in cast iron and green shag carpet with the seal of the Great Cecil’s office embossed in emeralds . For undress the Great C. must wear an Administrator’s helmet with a scarlet plume. The Great Cecil the name of an office not that of any particular person, like the title “Cesar.”

If this isn’t true I don’t want to know about it.

If I recall correctly, Manhattan wore a sharp-looking fedora, and was allowed to keep it when he retired from moderating.
