My dad had Narco NAV-122s in his planes. I never got my IFR rating, but I thought these were pretty slick. The NAV-122 was an all-in-one unit with the marker beacon lights right on the face (instead of elsewhere on the panel).
Since Narco is OOB, is anyone else making units similar to this? Or has Garmin pretty much taken over with their GPS NAV-COMs?
Almost everyone is going to integrated glass cockpits these days even in the smallest airplanes. That is a good thing in my mind because they can do a lot more than a collection of dedicated mechanical instruments can along with other advantages. Glass cockpits have almost every advantage over the older style instruments including total cost of ownership, the ability to be deeply multi-functional, increased reliability and weight savings.
I am not sure why you would want a new version of that instrument or why anyone would bother marketing a new one today although it is possible. The main appeal is nostalgia or perceived authenticity. Anyone that wants that instrument or just about any other can still have one however. There are plenty of used examples on the market coming from people converting their cockpits to glass. There are also specialty instrument shops that can repair just about anything (for a steep price).
