Modern Family 9/21 (spoilers possible)

And what was the line about the person who hired Dylan? Sounded like an “interesting” character…

A really strong man who turned out to be a woman, named Jake.

I think Mitchell is the funniest character on the show, just edging out Al Bundy.

My favorite scene (my shitty parahprase):
Bossy: Dylan, I need to tell you something.
Dylan: You want me to leave.
Bossy: No, the opposite.
Dylan: I want you to leave?

Hehehe.

I liked his follow up of “If I were not dating Haley I would be proud to share your bed and raise Luke, Alex and Haley as if they were my own”. (IIRC they had an episode last year where he admitted to having MILF fantasies about Claire.)

Ty Burrell looks mighty fine on a horse . . . or off one, for that matter.

He was also on CBS’s short lived series CHAOS from the end of last spring/beginning of the summer. That’s where I knew him from anyway.

I loved that Luke, dumb as he often is, knew the girls were trying to manipulate him into moving into the attic. He’s getting to be my favorite character.

Start on an upbeat comment:

I am loving Luke. Ever since I started watching this series, he’s always had some good scenes. I like how they’re developing his “feigned”(?) stupidity into actual awareness. As the youngest boy with two older sisters (as I was growing up), I am liking where his character is going.

Manny is still snarky (the “no fly list” line, as well as the “who gives us massages” line), but I like it. And the fact that he cracked under pressure and ratted out Gloria. Give him some points for integrity. And wasn’t that Gloria’s main argument (how Manny wouldn’t do something wrong because she raised him with proper values) to counter against the principal’s “Columbian people” argument?*

I like the fact that they’re (probably) using the same baby for Lilly’s character, as she is speaking now. I was afraid they would substitute another baby to replace her. I don’t have kids, so I’m not that aware of developmental stages, but I wonder how many takes they have to get her to repeat her lines on the mark. (Projection: If they start teaching her how to act at age three, she might be the next Liz Taylor. Or the next Tesha Campbell. Let’s wait and see.)

Okay, now the other side of the coin.

Didn’t like Alex’s interaction with the Nuyoukaner (that’s a NY-er) fat kid. Seemed to be filler.

I did like Dylan getting out of the picture. I never liked him, and although I understand the neccessity of having the oldest daughter having a b/f and all the angst that goes with it, I’d think she could do a lot better. Even if she is full of herself. And as was said upthread, it could lead to a series of funny episodes for her character.

The “I had to be the bad guy so you could come to the rescue” bit was lame. Although it did close that segment. I also liked Phil’s remarks to Jay re: “I’m a good husband…” I agree, it was about time. He tries pretty hard, and usually doesn’t screw up more than anybody else in the family. That scene really connected with the earlier one where he demonstrated his practice to hone skills in order to gain Jay’s acceptance. I thought it was sort of a “screw you if you don’t appreciate my efforts” kind of thing. Yah-hoo indeed!
I’ll try to come back tomorrow to talk about part II. This is one of my fave shows though.

I have to move over to the Community thread now.

  • (Aside) I coworker and I had a great conversation re: African Americans vs. Black Americans. He’s black and I’m not, but we basically agreed on each others topics. I found parallels to Gloria’s Columbian Defense. Also, wasn’t that in part two? I need to recheck my DVR. (/End Aside)

It’s a new Lilly. It was a bit offputting at first, since the old Lilly was always so silent and unemotional. The new girl has more oomph, for sure. But, once I got used to a new girl I noticed how funny the lines they gave her were. “We went shopping and got matchy hats!” “Kill the baby” Funny stuff.

Yeah, that Brooklyn kid was over the top and pretty annoying. The story with Alex’s crush last season was more adeptly handled.

Oh man. I will miss Dylan. He always had some of my favorite lines and scenes. I loved the awkwardness/sweetness between Clair and him when she let him know that she was ok with having him around. (Plus that song. Funny stuff.)
And, she did break up with him last season to be with a tutor. That was pretty boring. Hopefully, they’ll do a better job this year and have an array of funny interesting characters.

Luke is my current favorite kid character on tv. The character is written in a real true to life kid way. Not too mature or wise beyond his years. Just silly and fun, but with a serious sweet side. Plus, a little dumb, but only in the funniest ways. Once in a while he will make us an adult phrase, or concept. But, that makes sense for kids, too. He just always cracks me up.

I was thinking after watching these two back to back that Phil, of all the adults in the show, is rarely truly the bad guy. He’s always doing his best to keep everyone happy without an ulterior motive. He’s not perfect. But, I do think it is interesting that he is consistently the good guy. Sure, mostly the Al Bundy and his kids have flaws. But, Gloria and Cam have their selfish sides shown as well. Phil, while naive, is not often shown in that light. Maybe that’s why I like him so much? Or, probably because that actor is super funny.

I thought he was sincere regarding massages.
