Modern Family, May 9, 2012 -- "DisneyLand"

as the father of two girls of similar ages, I’m also getting very tired of this behavior IRL.

But no way does a kid that just started working there get to be one. It’s a prime gig, for people with performing experience. For the sake of comedy, though, I’ll allow it.

These days the characters don’t wander around the park like they did decades ago - there are specified character appearance locations, and it’s all very carefully scheduled - there’s a thread over in MPSIMS by a former costumed character. You can even get an app on your phone to search for a given character at each park on a given day.

Apparently “collecting” some of the rarer characters is a/the goal of some Disney fans. When we were at Disney World last fall, we passed up a chance to see Pocahantas (since my kids don’t give a shit about that movie), and when we told one such collector a few days later, she was completely shocked that we had done so.

Yup - as a woman with three sisters, I can assure you that the friend-like behaviour may not start until your twenties (if then).

I loved Jay snuggling with his two grown kids in the Lincoln performance - how they resisted at first, then just snuggled right into him.

And the slippers are initially more comfortable than heels* but slippers aren’t going to be very good for walking long distances

And when they got tangled up with those other kids, their conversation was exactly stereotypical of when the same thing happens to dog owners.

“Get down, Rex!”
“His name is Rex?”

The snuggling scene was very cute.

Phil’s expressions while fighting off the urge to throw up on the roller coaster were hilarious. He would look sick, then when his son looked at him he’d fake excitement - I was seriously laughing out loud because I’ve seen that at amusement parks more times than I can recall.

Yes, they are rigidly scheduled for time and location but they are still well distributed around the park and pretty much omnipresent. I’m not saying that there is a character in sight at all times but to spend a day at Disneyland and only see one character requires not paying attention (or spending the entire day in Tomorrowland which doesn’t get many (though Buzz still shows up from time to time and there’s an outdoor stage show involving Darth Vader).

Absolutely. And even if you could quickly swap shifts with someone to take a character out into the park, you still don’t go out unaccompanied.

I was that person the last time I went to Disney. I think it was Mission Space at Epcot that made me ill for the rest of the entire day.

Did anyone notice that Phil was wearing the same shoes in this episode as he wears in the Minute Maid commercials? I noticed it, thought about it, thought it was odd, then forgot about it until he mentioned that he probably caught the flu from sharing the OJ bottle with everyone at work. I’m a bit surprised that he was allowed to say that since he’s the MM spokesperson right now. I wonder if he’ll get in trouble for that. I know I know, he didn’t get sick from the OJ, but still, I’m willing to bet Minute Maid would have preferred they picked chocolate milk or something else rather then OJ of all things, and I’d imagine Ty should have known better. OTOH, maybe they purposely put it all together like that so people would remember him from the commercials.
