Well, isn’t there a huge legion of Dopers playing on Steam?
We should organize better and get a party of Dopers up and running to play.

There is a huge legion of Dopers on steam (109 members), but for the most part they have chosen to avoid the piece of shit that is MW2.
Is there any way to avoid playing on certain maps?
You can always vote to skip, and hope a bunch of other people think that map (Wasteland, Highrise, etc.) suck too.
Yesterday I felt really accomplished, I shot a dude off of one of the cranes when I saw him trying to run up to the top of it.
What annoys me is when it seems that certain maps just seem to come up all the freaking time (I’m lookin’ at you, Karachi and Invasion.)
Also, has anybody noticed how absolutely rare it is for mounted miniguns in the maps to actually be in useful locations? I think there’s a good one in Skidrow, and that’s the only one I’ve seen.
EDIT: Too late.
There are one or two good mini-gun placements in Wasteland. In the Karachi map there is one that only seems to be useful for covering incoming air drops, it is behind the spawning area…I really don’t get it either.
:o
They’re two of my favourite maps!
Wasteland and Invasion are my favorite maps. Can’t stand the afgan level, but every map is serviceable.
From worst to best in my opinion:
Rust
Favela
Karachi
Quarry
Scrapyard
Rundown
Highrise (the style of play has really changed on that map as people figure it out more)
Skidrow (much more fun with a team that communicates and has roles/areas to cover)
(After this, they’re all equally good, in my eyes)
Derail
Sub Base
Terminal
Invasion
Estate
Afghan
Underpass
Wasteland
With how easy they are to disable, I don’t use the turrets. They’re only good in some locations, but a good use for them is to constantly keep them moving. Don’t plant it in one location and leave it there. Move it to where it’s needed. Sometimes low-traffic areas can be converted into no-travel areas with a turret. Move it somewhere else more useful after the other team gets sawed down and let them keep it in the back of their minds.
Yes, what the heck? And I hate those two.
Also Derail comes up very infrequently. In all this time I am playing the game, Derail has come exactly two times.
I like the smaller maps. My personal favorites are Terminal, Scrapyard and Highrise
Also, it was finally nice dragging **interface2x **into a lobby, kicking and screaming. My Darn Snake Legs was next, but our room kept filling up before your game would and.
I love those cranes off to the sides. I can sit out there with a silenced sniper or an LMG and get big kill streaks before people can get in a position to pick me off. Generally, it happens only when the teams switch spawn-points and I don’t notice.
That one in Karachi is pretty darn useless. The one that is on the other side of the truck is also pretty useless. It covers a good area, but it’s too easy to pick off the gunner for it to be really useful. The other problem is that you can’t use them to take down air support. They just don’t swivel high enough. In MW, you could always use one of them to take out a heli. I’m sure that it was a balance issue since the launchers are so much better now.
He’s not talking about auto turrets, he’s talking about the ones that are built into the levels. I don’t use auto turrets either, at least not on most maps. I kinda like them on Karachi and Favela. There are some places you can set them there that are kinda sweet.
I was playing in a party with a friend of mine, anyway. We’ll get together one of these days. He’s probably going to be playing less because of ME2. I don’t think that’s one that I’ll be picking up. I just don’t have much use for single player games, and I despise 3rd person shooters. The claim that the combat “feels just like GoW” killed it for me.
Ah. Those stationary turrets are useless, pretty much. My bad.
We had room for two last night, too.
Judging by this thread and… well… the general consensus this seems to be very much a minority opinion.
There was one in one of the town-y maps (perhaps rundown or karatchi) that is sutuated pointing along a back-street (right next to the edge of the map) where you can get people running round the corner. I got about four kills in a row with it.
ETA: For anyone who doesn’t know (I imagine most do) you should hold the ‘alternate fire’ button down to cause them to spin constantly. That way when you do press fire you are shooting straight away instead of waiting for it to spin-up. If you don’t do that they pretty much are useless.
Pretty much everyone in the thread is a console player. As I said earlier in the thread, I’m not surprised that you like it - it’s a normal product for you, and when your expectations are low because you don’t know any better, then it’s easy to meet them.
But from everything I’ve heard from people who bought it, it’s about what I expected. Rampant cheating and exploiting and general asshattery, shitty netcode so that you spend a significant chunk of time not playing due to having host issues, and even when it does work the latency and general performance is sub-par, no communities, no custom content (sounds like there’s a lot of stupid imbalanced shit that would be easily fixed with server mods - woops), etc.
I’d probably pick it up if I could get it on sale for $20 somewhere, but it’s certainly not worth $60 or even $40. Given activision’s policy on sales, that seems unlikely.
In the meantime, if I’m in the mood for that sort of game I’ll play the vastly superior original.
Not seen any cheating.
Some asshatery (if I am to assume you mean assholish tactics in-game) but you learn to beat them and enjoy doing so.
A lot of host issues, but generally host migration is succesfull and I spend a significant amount of time actually playing.
Latency is fine 90 percent of the time.
No custom content… doesn’t bother me. I hated games were I’d join a server only to find that I’d have to sit there while it downloaded custom content, and then by the time I had it the game had finished and moved on to the next level I didn’t have.
It was a good time but the way I was playing last night, I was clearly doing more harm than good so I slinked off after a couple of games. Lately, I’ve been doing better on the slow and stealthy hardcore type matches. Last night, it seemed like every third step I took was accompanied by a bullet in my face! You guys had some great players, though, they mopped the floor with those guys.
I think it was our opposition that was subpar, frankly. No, hop on in, please. The people I roll with are from another website and they’re all 25 or older, so we take delight in playing against kids that aren’t 21 yet and kicking their asses in a party. Besides, you get better by playing better people.
That party was primarily lesser players. Communicate, follow directions, issue orders, and you’ll fit right in regardless of skill level. As a whole, we don’t take it nearly as seriously as we did Halo. I know I sure don’t.
If you’re on and want to play some Hardcore too, let me know. The silenced sniper rifles are actually useful then.
